The lake was beautiful but there is very little to do once there, perhaps a good place to go hiking. Its peacefulness and lack of civilisation is part of its charm in my opinion.

It is simply stunning! After seemingly endless visits to ruins, however important, it was a wonderful change of scenery to drive to San Gregorio Matese at Lago di Matese. It’s a huge lake and when we stopped at San G, the kids had fun doing horse rides amid the beautiful scenery of lake surrounded by mountains. It was a little windy and a windbreaker or fleece would have been welcome. No joke! Also the drive up there is not for the faint hearted. Lots of twists and turns. Also being non Italian and despite driving here for more than a week we are still not quite used to the fast driving even on narrow lanes and the constant over taking so careful on the driving but the views and scenery well worth it all!
