The mountain slopes were closed but it was an awesome experience- both young and old enjoyed the fun on the snow. very cold and wet but good fun- I would recommend that they extend the restaurant, as it is overcrowded. very good entertainment and a good drive from Clarens in south Africa. snow experience was exciting.

I have sent this to 3 email address and not had a response so posting here now.

On arrival we were greeted by staff whom didn't seem too interested in our arrival and given a sheet of paying activities that was old and had other people's scribbles on it. Not a great first impression.

Arriving at our lodge we saw we were put at the back of the lodge, with no view and had to wind our way down dark, small passages. We were the only ones in the whole lodge of 12 rooms. Why couldn't we be put in the front of the lodge, by the view?

I went back to reception to ask for an extra blanket as it is freezing (expected overnight temperature of -13°). I was told I wasn't allowed another blanket, even though we were the only ones in the WHOLE lodge. We were told "What happens if we suddenly have an influx of visitors overnight?" Really?! Surely your customer's comfort should be top priority? I found the reception staff to be very aloof.

Suggestion for the restaurant is to put the fireplace in the middle of the room and then many people can sit around it, instead of just 2 people. Also put double doors in so every time people come in or out they don't let in a gust of freezing wind. I found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful in the restaurant and applaud them for this. The kitchen however leaves much to be desired. The chef needs training on making meals. The only meal I recommend is the burger but enjoyed the eisbein too (I had the last available one, of course). It is also an extremely limited menu. When you are staying at a resort for a number of days, options are essential. Also just about every order, it was guaranteed that the waiter would return saying they didn't have an item or 2. We would watch them return in the same manner to other tables too. Please also consider warming the plates! This will keep the food warmer for longer as the food always arrives really cold, due to the environment.
Why oh why is there no soap at the toilets at the restaurants?! No dispensers, no soap, nothing. Not hygienic at all!!
I would also suggest making payments at the restaurant for the slopes. When children are having fun tubing down the slopes etc it is very inconvenient for the parent to have to get in the car to drive all the way back to reception to pay for more activities. On this note, the slope staff are also very friendly and helpful and good with children of all ages.

The rooms are very basic but warm. There is double glazing, a gas heater and electric blankets making it in fact a warn nights' sleep. We did however have the sign indicating which lodge we were at attached to our wall. So every time the wind blew we would hear a terrible scraping and screeching noise. Very unpleasant. We did report this but when I went out with maintenance in the freezing night, I was told nothing could be done about it.

On day 3 we ran out of toilet paper after waking in the morning. We went for breakfast and were out for quite a while, only returning to the room at 12:00. The rooms still hadn't been serviced and therefore still no toilet paper. We went up to reception to ask them for a roll of toilet paper and again were denied! We were told that we would need to wait for housekeeping?!

Every night we had an issue with our gas heater. First night it ran out of gas. This is acceptable, not something that can be predicted. Maintenance came very quickly to change the gas. 2nd night it took 3 hours (17:00-20:00). We were advised then that the heaters are always giving problems. 3rd night I reported the heater not working at 19:00. I'm still waiting for someone to come and fix it. We therefore woke in the middle of the night quite cold and therefore didn't have a good night's sleep.

On checkout we of course also had a problem. I was asked if I had paid for the accommodation?! How do they not know if they have received payment?? I made payment on arrival using my credit card, not an EFT. The staff member was trying to phone the lady who had checked us in. When I realised what was happening I showed her the SMS confirmation of payment. She then needed me to email the confirmation of payment to her. Why does the staff not have records of this??

I found the whole of the resort to be very clean from the rooms, to common property to around the restaurant and slopes. Congrats to all these staff members.

I hope you will take the above as constructive criticism as is intended.

I await your reply on the above.

The service and management was poor. Reception staff do not offer or discuss the options for activities and there is no paypoint at the slopes so if you want to check out options first before deciding on your activity then you have to trek all the way back up to do so. It then took 50 minutes to receive our order of hot chocolate at the restaurant on a fairly slow day. This while customers who came in after our group received full meals. At inquiry, it seems that they don't have a system to track orders, which is shocking for an establishment of this reputation. Definitely did not live up to expectation.

We drove a 200km round trip from Fouriesburg, SA to see the landmark views of northern Lesotho.
The Caledonspoort Border Control formalities were easy and fast. After paying a 75 rand road charge in cash, we drove down the quiet paved road to a turnoff marked “Afriski” to Rt. A1. On this nearly perfect road(a few potholes on 1st 10km), we drove eastward for 75km, first winding back to the bordering Mohokare River Valley before beginning the long climb, passing a verdant landscape dotted with traditional rondovals, to the 9,252’ Moteng Pass. Then downward before winding up with vistas of waterfalls, herder stone rondavels and fog to the 10,571’ Mahlasela Pass.
Today, we found very little activity at the 10,007’ Afriski Ski Resort in spite of the open sign on Sky Restaurant “Africa’s highest restaurant”.
The late morning sun rewarded us with even more dramatic views on our return, albeit to a much busier environment of locals tending cattle, selling fruit and walking along the highway with combis and taxis trolling for passengers. We drove through the busy and somewhat hectic Butha Buthe, returning to the easy border and back to our lovely Fouriesburg Country Inn.

Caution booking, I’ve been fighting with Afriski for over 3months to return a deposit. You can never get through to call centre, no one ever returns emails. Their support is non-existent.

Was a day visitor and sadly the skiing equipment rental staff was very poor. The ticket printer was down and we were given a handwritten note where the staff member forgot to include all the activities we had paid for. We spent over 2 hours trying to resolve it and ended up with only half a day of activities instead of the full day we had paid for. I suggest that the staff get some customer service training. I also recommend that the restaurant considers getting more staff at peak times as it was taking more than 90 mins to get a pizza order the day we were there.

The skiing was lots of fun for the family.

After a 6 hour long drive we were greeted my the most unprofessional and rude staff. They double booked our chalet and therefore we landed up with one we did not book for. We had wanted a luxury chalet - Winter park but instead we got an old one with not enough rooms. They fought to not refund us the difference in prices of accommodation. Due to having to argue with them we missed a whole day of skiing. The manger Nicollete was extremely rude and unprofessional. She raised her voice and constantly argued and blamed us. After many arguments and chasing after her she promised to refund us for the difference. However she still has not kept to her word and we haven't received a refund. Over and above, the staff at reception are extremely slow and rude. The guys operating the ski lifts and the staff at the slopes are drunk. This is extremely hazardous to get the guests. I personally found this extremely disappointing and I would not return. I constantly had to look for the managers and they did not apologize but instead became defensive and abrupt.

The good:

Restaurant staff were accommodating and helpful. Restaurant food was fantastic and well priced. The booths at restaurant have plug points so you can sit with your laptop if need be

The slopes are fantastic, well groomed and cater to all levels of experience

The instructors were patient and got us from beginners who could not even stand on a snowboard to a family who can bomb down the main slope at 60km/h within 3 days

The rooms are warm and all beds have electric blankets and there is a gas heater and double glazing in all rooms

The bad:

The reception staff are lazy and could not give a hoot. Our accommodation was somehow reflecting different dates on their system, despite me receiving confirm phone calls and emails from afriski. They put us in a different room than what we booked for

The apartment rooms are noisy. Every night we had people partying well past midnight with little regard for their neighbors

We bought sim cards on site and the guy responsible for this doesn’t seem very interested. I suspect it’s a hassle for him. I would suggest get a local SIM card before you arrive

We handed in one checkers bag of washing and waited 3 days to get our clothes back. Plenty of excuses from staff around this

The other:

The road from Johannesburg to afriski is mostly ok. There are some bad pothole sections that can damage your wheels so you’ll need to drive carefully. Once in lesotho the roads are very narrow and the mountain pass up to afriski is incredibly steep and twisty. If the road is dry, a normal car is fine but I would recommend a 4x4 if there is snow and ice

Despite the extremely frustrating service from afriski staff, we had the most amazing experience and have already booked again for next year

I’m hoping that this current situation with bad staff is temporary to Covid and that things will improve in future

I do understand that post covid business takes a while to recover but,
…facilities are dirty
…staff is unknowledgeable and they make you feel like they are doing you a favour
…staff smoking and nibbing there sigaret buds everywhere
…facilities are rundown and out of service
…resturant and the service is horrible and provide no worth for your money

This year was my 5th trip to afriski. I met my wife on the ski slopes in 2016 and to see this saddens me.

Sincerely
Johan Greyling

Don't be fooled by the photos and website. Serious lack of management. Totally a waste of God's great nature. There is NO INDICATION on their website what it really cost to experience something they sometimes get for free.
It was humanly impossible for our whole family of 4 to have at least a bit of fun.
Restaurant is terrible. Order food at least 5hours prior as the waiting period is ridiculous.

As a first timer the staff are uneducated and irritated and impatient to assist us if we ask questions.
TOTAL DISAPOINTMENT!!!
