Overview
More
Ljotipollur is a explosion crater lake in the south highlands, situated in the southernmost crater in the Veidivotn fissure system. Strangely enough, Ljotipollur's name means 'Ugly Puddle', since this crater anything but, being beautifully red with the deep trout-filled lake at its bottom and high edges on its sides.

One word; Breath-taking. Amazing spot for a lunch or just photos. Can get extremely windy (and therefore; cold) though as it was when I was there, so bring clothes accordingly.

Although named "ugly puddle" this giant crater hosts a beautiful lake. A hike around the edge will take you roughly 1.5 hours. Great place for a pause west of Hekla.

Great stop if passing by. As it was extremely cold we could not admire its beauty for longer than we would if the weather permitted. Make sure you are dressed warmly before leaving the vehicle.

We drove from Geysir to Klaustur in South Iceland, and we took the route through the Landmannalaugar. The landscape was changing every thirty minutes. From geysers to lush greens to lava fields, small lakes in craters, painted rocks/mountains and hot springs to crossing rivers, bare...More

Not sure how it could be described as "revolting" or "creepy" by another reviewer. The "ugly puddle", along with its backdrop, allows for great pictures with the myriad of colours - lovely little crater.

Although it's name means "ugly puddle," we went on a clear day when the water's reflections was perfect against the hills behind. I would say that these will be some of the most iconic photos of our trip.
