The citadel is perched above the town of Saint Jean Pied de Port. From the citadel there are excellent views, of not only the town, but the surrounding valleys and the Pyrenees off in the distance. The citadel itself is very basic but still worth...More

This is a town full of pilgrims and tourists. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 and is really quite lovely with its elegant old buildings and narrow cobblestone streets. Since the middle ages, it has been the starting point on...More

Walk up to the top for a fabulous view of the countryside. A lovely walk up the main road. Stop along the way at some lovely shops and pubs. Enjoy the ambiance.

You can't go into the building (it's a school) but you can walk the walls and of course visit the shops within the walls. Very interesting buildings and the information boards make fascinating reading. So many pilgrims still walking the route!

The climb was hard(especially when pushing a baby in the trolley on cobblestoned street) but it was worth the hard work. The view from top is breathtakingly beautiful.

We enjoyed our visit to St Jean and the citadel was wonderful to see, such amazing structures built so long ago for the protection of the town, worth the walk

We walked up here from the town on our first full day in France, ahead of the Camino. Fortunate to have a bright sunny day that gave excellent views. Well worth a visit to understand some of the early history of this area.

First of all make sure you have comfortable shoes because you will be walking over cobblestones! Unfortuately I wore flip flops and my feet objected strongly! It is quite a steep climb but I assure you the terrain will be steeper if you are walking...More
