About
Nicopolis is an ancient city that was built on 31 B.C by Octavios after the batle of Aktio. If you translate it from Greek to English Nicopolis, means the city of victory. It is placed just outside the town of Preveza. It is great for someone that is interested in ancient history to visit that place. Also the museum that they recently built near the ancient city of Nicopolis is one of the most moderate and intresting musuems in Greece.

The site is where Augustus founded the city after defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. The museum is located near the site and can be visited with the same ticket. The museum has a rich collection of exhibits, from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD. Exceptional early Christian mosaics can be seen on the site.

A well presented & interesting museum

The Nicopolis museum is in a modern building on the outskirts of Preveza. It contains an excellent variety of items from the ruins of the Roman / Early Christian city of Nicopolis which lies 2 Kms away. The collection is well displayed with information in Greek & English & helpful drawings & diagrams. Well worth a visit .

small well laid out museum with some well-preserved antiquities

Surprisingly well thought out in terms of displays and the information provided is much better than in most Greek museums. They really should switch on the air-conditioning in summer

A very good museum, that gives an insight to the important historic events that took place in the general area of Preveza.

Disappointed

I read an enthusiastic report in the Independent newspaper a few months ago so we decided to build a holiday around a trip to Nicopolis and read up about it. I checked every website I could find inc the Regional cultural site which covered bank holidays in 2019 and concluded that it was closed on Mondays and open until 1500 or later every other day. So we went on a Tuesday and - of course- it was closed. We could still see the tremendous South Gate and walk by that section of wall but the other sites were closed, men were working on the theatre which appears to be permanently closed to the public. Augustus’s triumphal arch looked as if it must be much reduced as the roof above it is not very high although we couldn’t of course look in because that area was padlocked up. As a footnote we went on to Kassope which is highly recommended but that was closed too of course and you couldn’t even get near enough to see the view. We love Greece and its monuments but so often find that however much you try to plan you will be disappointed because official websites bear no relation to reality. Sites appear to open at the whim of the local ticket-issuer. I see someone else found Nicopolis closed on a Mon. Such a waste of their unique resources.
