About
Admire the full length and vastness of the Great Aletsch Glacier in all its glory – from the Eggishorn, the 2869 m-high viewpoint. Just turn around for a view of the higher peaks: the Mönch, the Eiger, the Jungfrau, the Wannenhorn and the Finsteraarhorn, and to the west the Weisshorn, the Mischabel group with the Dom, and the Matterhorn itself form a breathtaking 360° panorama. This impressive viewpoint is just a 20-minute journey from Fiesch; the change at Fiescheralp is easy and suitable for those with limited mobility. The Eggishorn is suitable for wheelchairs and prams.

Yes you have to go up there! Take a seat, have a drink and enjoy the sight! When cloudy go back again another day, you won't regret it!

To get here is a two-cable car ride from the train station. The first of these trips is less painful than the second and runs to a time table that is commensurate with the size of the gondola. The second gondola is smaller, has a shorter journey and is also run to a time table. You are going to wait a long time when it is busy because even though the gondola cannot accommodate the queue it sticks rigidly to the timetable so you have to wait for the next one by which time the queue is long again etc, etc, etc. The same on the decent. Pure madness when a return journey only takes minutes. I say this to warn you as it may well put you off but I urge you to persevere because the views you get at the top are outstanding. There is not a lot at the top, a small café and vantage points but oh my goodness, what landscape!

If you come to Fiesch by train or by car it is perfect for going up the mountain. The train station is in the same building as the gondola. The parking lot is right across the street and you can pay for your parking ticket with cash or card either in the station, in the parking or right at the exit. Hat off to the Swiss infrastructure! We took the gondola to Fiescheralp. There you have plenty of restaurants and terraces, accomodation and ski slopes, perfect place for walking too. From Fiescheralp we took the cable car to Eggishorn from where we could see the beautiful Aletsch Glacier. I could even spot a Ferrata trail that takes you all the way up there. It is said you can even spot the Matterhorn from this point but we were still under the influence of the sands from Sahara so it was quite murky. I guess it is best to come see this spot in summer. When buying a gondola ticket, pay attention: sometimes the cashier does not have the head-set on and does not hear you. It happened in our case and first gave us tickets only to Fiescheralp. If I had not ask for confirmation that I can also reach Eggishorn...

Fiesch is one of the top sites for paragliding in Switzerland. The mountain also has extensive walking routes and mountain bike trails. It is also a great place to see Europe’s largest glacier before global warming destroys it forever.

Eggishorn is a lovely laid back place accessible by cable car. Miles of trails along the mountain ridges.

Cable car to top of Eggishorn packs people in like sardines.. never heard of COVID-19.. it was so packed that my party of four got out of the cable car.. and we complained to the person operating the cable car but he said not my problem 😖

This is a truly amazing place to visit. The scenery is as good as it gets in Europe. You can combine it with a ride on the Furka pass and will have a great experience.

I mean... Waw! Incredible! When you reach the eggishorn with the cable car and you see the Aletschgletscher is an enormous surprise. And probably is one of the cheapest places to see that glacier, much more than Jungfraujoch.

I arrived by train from Brig only to find that the second cable car is currently NOT OPERATING. There were no signs in English and the ticket seller tried to explain the situation but I don’t speak German.
From a timetable I found on the wall it appears it stops in late April and doesn’t start again until early in June when the summer tourist season starts.
So forget it if you’re travelling in May and early June.

This place is on our vacation route and we were planning to stop here to go to the top of the Eggishorn. However it looks like the cable car will not be open at that time (beginning of June).
Are there parts of the mountain that are easily accessible by foot? If not, can you suggest a hiking trail somewhere in the area that is accessible in June?

Speziell noch so was unprofessionelles der Bahn. Hier wird von jemandem Auskunft gegeben, der das Gebiet nicht so gut kennt?
