This is a wonderful place , not to be missed. Superb table and wines. Surroundings are beautiful. Service was excellent. Travel a bit further down the road and visit the historic town of Elim, originally a slave settlement of slaves who escaped Cape Town by following the trail of the Eland over the berg... Overberg.

The most charming and delightful experience on our trip in South Africa. The owners, Dirk and Sandra Human with staff was absolutely amazing. The resturant, the food, their craft beers and own produced wines coupled with their generosity and genuin care was from another world. In addition to their wine, wine tasting, a nice small shop, beers and fantastic food they also have a cottage with four separate nice and cute small apartments where you can stay overnight. The view over the farmland is fantastic and if you are lucky you might even see a small aircraft landing on their private landing strip right in front of you.
If you like a walk in the area, ask Dirk or Sandra, of the way to the wineland.
The area is genuin farmland with genuin hospitality. It is just short drive from Cape Agulla and it is well worth to visit them. If you are really lucky you might go there when they have one of their venues or festivals. You can never find any better spot in the area so do not think twicw of going there.

What a wonderful place for a couples or family gathering!
The owner and daughter had the sweet dogs roaming around. Lots of families. The food is incredible!

I booked a table for lunch with friends visiting from England. Upon arrival although we had booked a table we were told to sit anywhere as they were not busy. Once we placed our order we were told that a big group had just placed an order so the kitchen would be serving them first and then the other tables would be served. We waited one hour 15 minutes before realising that other tables of guests who had arrived after us were being served. Eventually we walked out as the staff had no idea where our order was and thought they had given our order to the wrong table.

A group of 4 of us visited the Black Oystercatcher for lunch and had a delicious meal served by friendly helpful staff.
Upon arrival, we walked from the car park through the lovely gardens where you can see all the fruit and vegetables they grow, up the stairs (there are quite a few which is worth bearing in mind if you have a lack of mobility) and up to the shop which sells a lovely array of Black Oystercatcher wines, then along to the restaurant.
When we arrived it was mid week and quite early so there was only one other group in the large but welcoming restaurant. We chose a table and were brought our drinks quickly. While we waited, we admired the restaurant, which is a barn style with a large fireplace and even had little birds (they may have been swifts) with nests in the beams.
Our food arrived and it was a large but delicious lunch - we had a cheeseburger, fish of the day, Waldorf salad and the steak pan - all of which we loved. The steak pan was particularly good and with 3 beers and 2 soft drinks came to 650R which is around £36 so superb value for money.
The Black Oystercatcher has a lovely outlook which on a sunny day would be stunning, but even when it was overcast was still pretty and has a nice modern feel with a pond out the front where their adorable dog kept taking a dip.
I don't know whether they cater for large parties, but it would be an amazing venue for a wedding or special occasion.
Next time we come to the Overberg area, we will definitely visit the Black Oystercatcher.

Dear Temer2, thank you for the kind and detailed review. We're glad you enjoyed your visit at the Black Oystercatcher Restaurant (and that you got to meet Stella, the Malamute - she's forever taking a dip in our infinity pool). We do indeed host weddings and corporate events at our Restaurant (which we transform into an appropriate venue to suit the occasion). We look forward to seeing you the next time you head down to our lovely Overberg region. Hoping it's soon. Kind regards, The Black Oystercatcher team

We stopped over at the winery after tasting Frasers Folly craft beer in struisbaai. It’s a fantastic, local craft beer brewery on the wine farm premises.

For the Meal: we recommend the steak plate. Creamy, well-prepared, quality meat.

To drink, definitely try the craft beers: even if just to give them a taste with the beer flight taster.

For dessert: have the cheese cake. Well prepared, delicious freshly baked cheese cake. And any coffee snob won’t be disappointed by their brew. I didn’t catch the name of the roaster, but it was well up to standard.

The venue also has a great view, with a lawn, a pool and a friendly Husky for the kids to play with.

Thank you, 738albertv, for the kind review and for the recommendations. And we're glad you liked the meal - and the coffee. Our barista, Stanley, served you Beaver Creek coffee - it's the world's most southern coffee estate, and is proudly South African. We hope to see you soon again, to enjoy our menu, our views and our Malamute. Kind regards, The Black Oystercatcher team

What a great burgers! Six excellent local beers, directly from brewery! Fine own wines! And if you have own plane, there is runway just across the road!
We loved our lunch with wine and beer. There were two groups by planes, so also spectating aviation.
And then that great wine tasting. Extra thanks for great 'gravad lax'!!
Three hours of pure enjoyment, and nice wines gave pleasure also later. Really good reason to return some day to this somehow remote area - though now road is on tarmac to west and northeast.

Hi Ettelbruck, We are indeed a countryside destination, so thank you for heading out to visit us in the heart of the Overberg. And thank you for the kind review - we're glad you really enjoyed your visit, your food, your craft beer and your wine. (Your timing was good to see planes making use of our runway, with pilots and passengers popping in for lunch). And here's hoping your return "some day" is soon! Kind regards, The Black Oystercatcher team

A place that started as a brewery, soon planted grapes. Started of by planting the varieties they liked, but soon realized that the area is Sauvignon Blanc country. Wooded, blended with Semillon, or just fruity with mineral under tones. Great tasting and lots of attention. Then there is the beer tasting, five different ones at 100mL a time, at cheaper than a bottle. Great experience.

Thanks very much for the review, Roedig. Just a quick note: The Black Oystercatcher started as a wine farm, when we planted vineyards in 1998 (one of the first to plant here in the cool Elim Wine Ward). From there we grew (the Restaurant was added in 2008), and later the Self-Catering Cottages were added. We bought Fraser's Folly Craft Brewery in 2016, and at that point Fraser's brewery moved to the farm. Thank you for the kind words, and we're glad you enjoyed your visit. Here's hoping we see you soon again. Kind regards, The Black Oystercatcher team

Great find with this place, the wines are lovely, and the whole reception area of the estate is beautifully presented.
The wine tasting was at the time of writing, at no charge.
We would have stayed for lunch, which looked superb, but time didn’t allow.
They have started brewing beer too, which clearly they have in the bag, as this too was great.
If you are nearby, it’s a must visit

Thank you, DrWatson6, for the kind review. Our standard wine tasting remains free of charge, although there is a charge attached to our reserve and tutored tastings. We have all those details on our website. Here's hoping next time you can stay for lunch too, and spend a little more time in our special patch of the Overberg. Kind regards, The Black Oystercatcher team
