What a fabulous and stunning reserve this is but spoilt by people throwing your plastic refuse everywhere. It was in the Heuningnes River, in the Fynbos, on the beach and in the sea. Saw no staff, whatsoever, picking up/collecting any rubbish. Birds, Flamingos, Fish - all at risk. A national angling competition was taking place, these fishermen just also watched the plastic bottles blowing across the sand.
The accommodation, Grunter cottage, was neglected. The smell in the kitchen cupboards was really bad, the sheets on the double bed did not appear to be fresh. Everything just somewhat run-down and neglected.
Would I go again, No.

Beautiful scenery with lots of birdlife. There is a small entrance fee and limited facilities (toilets) by the gate with a picnic area by the water. The walks are breathtaking through unspoilt countryside and beautiful beaches. There is also a quite demanding, marked trail through finbos and along the foreshore.
Swimming was good in the estuary but the only downside was the presence of biting flies on the small swimming beach.
If you want peace and quiet, some exercise and nearly perfect surroundings this is the place to go. We went there twice during our stay and could not believe that there were so few visitors.

To get to Die Mond Nature Reserve is about 15km's gravel road. This does not justify the view or expensive entrance fee you have to pay.

I cannot come to Cape Agulhas without a visit to the treasure of nature. Every time I come I marvel at the tidal river lagoon enclosed by white sand dune pillars at the neck with the river flowing down the centre at low tide or widening into a lake at high tide. The colours are phenomenal; truly white sand edged with green, yellow, purple and brown, giving on to the lagoon with blues of the faintest hue deepening as the water gets darker. Birds abound, canaries, plovers, egrets, Kingfisher, waders, to name but a few. The walk to the mouth is not strenuous but beware of sinking sand when the walkways stop. Swimming is much warmer than in the open sea and one can wade or swim across at the mouth to explore the other side. The old wire rope swing bridge across the river near the entrance has had to be replaced by a sturdier structure which will disappoint children who return in the hope of some fun.
It is accessible by ordinary car on dirt roads. Beware of the corrugated stretches.

Unusual small nature reserve with an incredible suspension bridge, lovely river and estuary, fantastic dunes and beach and a huge number of rare birds and plants.

This park is a paradise! Walk alongside the Heuningnesrivier to a spectacular beach, where the river flows into the sea.
Swim with tiny fishes in the shallow, pristine waters on the way to the beach, and marvel at the amazing bird life, including flamingoes that will sometimes put on a spectacular flight display, revealing their beautiful colour.
High, pure white sand dunes, tea colored clear river water at low tide, turquoise blue at high tide. Climb to the look out point and stand in awe of nature.
The road is not bad at all unless there have been heavy rains.

We visited De Mond, without really knowing what to expect! We were met by the friendly staff at the entrance, who explained the route we could walk all the way to the beach and what animal life we must look for.
It is about a 4 - 5 km walk all the way from the entrance to the beach and back, so wear your walking shoes! You can also have a picnic at De Mond next to the lagoon! So pack a few drinks or snacks to have next to lagoon or even on the beach!
We saw a tortoise, a huge flock of flamingos and Egyptian geese!

Dont forget your wild card, they do not have the facility to look up details via an ID no. Also make sure you take a map at the office as they do not explain the area or the walk so we ended up doing a walk along a boardwalk to the mouth which was equally beautiful but could not cross due to the tide coming in. On our return we saw the signs for the Sterna Trail.

You basically have two trail options: (1) a short (1.5 km there and 1.5 km back) walk from the entry to the beach and back (for this one, turn left after you cross the bridge), or (2) a longer (6.5 km) circular trail -- the Sterna Trail (for this one, turn right after you cross the bridge). We did the longer one, which would have been fine for all physically fit people, but we had one elderly person with us for whom it was just too much (although 3 young children, including a 6-year old, made it no problem). It was slow going due to our limiting factor (the elderly person), so the whole walk took us nearly 3 hours, although otherwise, we should normally have been able to make it back within 1.5-2 hours. It involves climbing up and down sand dunes at some points, and walking quite some distance (at least 2 km) along the beach, before hitting the river and heading back up toward the entrance (which is basically the short route).
All in all, though, it's definitely worth seeing -- the inland vegetation is great, and the views from the beach and along the river are very nice.

Hi there,
I'm interested in the cottage in De Mond Nature Reserve. I just wondered how private it is from day visitors to the reserve, and it is peaceful?
Thanks so much!
Warm regards,
Anne

What is a wild card and can anyone get one
Written 31 May 2018
There are quite a few options available. It saves the cost of entry and conservation fees to many parks and reserves so is worthwhile if you visit often - best check the SANParks website.
