In 1898 building work began on the Pere Mata psychiatric institute, one of the great projects of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The building marked the beginning of the brilliant Catalan modernist era in the city of Reus. After its completion, Domènech went on to design other buildings here and the spirit of Catalan modernism spread vigorously throughout the whole city.

Was designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, who was a teacher of Gaudi. Apart from the building the furniture is very amazing.

One of the little secrets of this area really worth a visit. The details applied to restoring the sanitorium were well thought out.

This is a surprise, the detail that has been applied so lavishly to this sanitorium is stunning. Some of the efforts to restore it are a bit rough but the tiles woodwork and scraffitto work remain essentially undamaged. We'll worth searching out.

We read about this place before we went to Reus. You can take a bus there or walk. Although you can visit only a part of the institute, it is worth going. The building is beautiful.

The place is being used as a psychiatric institution. It can be visited anyhow and some of the pavillions are used during summer for classical music concerts. A privileged activity!

A modernist psychiatric clinic. The interior, decoration and furniture is intact. The architecture and design reflect the for that time modern approach of the (rich) patients. Interior and decoration are overwhelming, every detail is esthetic and functinal.
