The mountain is near Grundarfjordur, a teensy-weensy town in west Iceland. With a summit 1,500 feet above sea level, Mount Kirkjufell the biggest landmark in the village of about 900 residents. Kirkjufell stands on snaefellsnes peninsula of its own, a stunning backdrop for the multicolored Icelandic sky.

Adding the West peninsula to our itinerary was so worth it... we just loved the 2 days spent seeing the different sites (and no where near as crowded with tour buses as the South & Circle). And then to see this mountain was just beautiful....More

Kirkjufell mountain is a great stopping point while driving around the Snaefellsnes peninsula. We stopped by the falls parking lot and took some pictures from there.

Easy to see and photograph. Worthwhile stop along the snaefulness Peninsula road. Considered the most photographed mountain in Iceland.

We didn't see anyone climbing. I read that you need to hire guides. There are plenty of other beautiful places to hike!

"If "the town" is Grundarfjörður, then absolutely!" This would be my answer too. We stayed at the Framnes Hotel, a short walking distance from the mountain. Hope my information was helpfull. David

I drove in a Golf, lol :) Pretty much everywhere on the coast. Take your time and explore!
