After the tours in the last days being cancelled due to storms and extreme weather, we managed to be in Olafsvik on the right day to get on a tour. Since we didn't book in advance, we went to the harbour the day before and...More
A Laki Tours whale watching trip is the one to take! On our ride, we saw too many whales to count! They were playing and gave us a big show. We also saw dolphins as well a puffling. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and clearly...More
Our first impression was very positive, as we were handed out high-quality warm and waterproof overalls for our trip. Our second impression was that the boat was rather overcrowded, but that was the last negative. A few minutes out of Olafsvik we had already seen...More
We chose Laki tours because they seemed to be the most responsible company regarding the respect and protection of whales. We took the tour out of Holmavik. We were literally escorted out of the harbor by countless dolphins and pilot whales. It was unreal! The...More
okay we did the puffin tour and it was almost the end of thes eason, but we did see af ew on the water - the boat ride was fun (a bit wet - so dress warm) - their naturalist on board was quite interesting...More
I can't say much more than the person who posted yesterday, but they're 100% right. We heard that whale-watching in Reykjavik is sketchy so we decided to give a full day to travel up and back to go with Laki in Holmavik. It was INCREDIBLE....More
I have just returned from the trip of my dreams! I went to Iceland, specifically to Holmavik, to watch Humpback whales. It was my birthday promise to myself on reaching 60. . We stayed for five days and I took seven trips on the Laki...More
As an Icelander that spends much time by the sea I've often seen whales, but this was my first time on a whale watching tour. I wasn't expecting much (thinking I've seen this all before), but being so close to the humpbacks was incredible. Our...More
I feel like Amy C, in wanting the keep Laki Tours in Holmavik as a secret but I also want to sing their praises. We went out several days in a row and saw amazing sights - Humpbacks feeding and deep diving, pilot whales and...More
We booked for the 3 hours whale spotting tour with the whole family of seven.
The tour is very well organized and they supply a full whaler waterproof suit, just in case just were not conveniently dressed.

There is a lot of natural wonders on the snæfellsness peninsula where Grundafjordur is located - black pebble beaches, volcanoes you can go to the top, the famous snaefellsjokull glacier which journey to the centre of the earth is based on. If you are travelling alone, I can really recommend 'The Freezer Hostel and Culture Centre.' It has hostel rooms, and really good to meet people, as well as a utterly fantastic unique 'Journey to the centre of the earth' musical every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as other shows on every other day of the week. This is based on Stykkisholmur which is near Grundafjordur and Olafsvik (This is where they currently go out from on the Snaefellsness).
Holmavik is a different area, on the edge of the west fjords. This is really good if you want to see Humpbacks, whereas Olafsvik is best for Orcas and Sperm Whales, and occasionally others. Of course, both is good too! There are supermarkets and mini markets in the towns around, as well as plenty restaurants.
I personally prefer the Snaefellsness peninsula due to the fact that you can get most of Icelands Beautiful landscapes and sights on this one peninsula, as well as some of the best places to see Orcas (Killer Whales) and Sperm Whales in the world - but Both are very good!
Feel free to let me know should you have any more questions

You're given overalls which will keep you dry, these are big enough to go over whatever you are wearing. I would suggest wearing what you'd normally wear walking around and then put the overalls on top.
There is an inside area but it's not heated. I would suggest you wrap up warm and spend all your time on deck. This gives you the best chance of seeing whales which is what the tour is all about afterall!
