Delightful House on the River
Jul 2021 • Solo
The Monks Fishing House is a treasure. If you walk through Cong Abbey and across the park behind it you will find this beautiful house on the river by the bridge.
It was probably built in the 15th century by the monks from the Abbey They fished from its steps and through a rectangular opening on the floor.
Apparently there was a rope which when pulled rang a bell in the kitchen of the abbey to let the cook know fresh fish had been landed.
You can walk out to it, it's free to enter and makes for lovely pictures. So serene, I loved it there.

The monks use to fish from this place during medieval times. A nice walking trail leading to the Ashford castle starts after the bridge laying next to the monk's hut.

A Lovely Adjunct to the Abbey

The 15th cent. monks' fishing house was fascinating and must have been a wonderfully peaceful place from which they fished.

Charming site
Oct 2019
A short distance from Cong Abbey is the Monk's Fishing House. This is situated right in the rushing water from the river connected by a stone bridge walkway. Due to it's location, it is very picturesque. You can just imagine sitting in this little house with the fireplace to keep you warm bringing up the nets with fish for your dinner. Sounds more inviting than most ice fishing huts. Very charming little site

Nice site along the river

We walked through the abbey, along the river and came back by the fishing house. It was really a unique site. The views along the river are quite pretty as well.

This is a charming relic with lovely views down the river and makes for a pleasant place to stop while walking through the grounds of the former and now ruined abbey and which are now a public park.
