This museum is pretty small so you don't need more than half an hour to look through it. It's half interesting to go around and learn about Nan.

The 120 year old stylish building (called "Hor Kham") was once a residence of former lords of Nan and was then turned into Nan's first city hall after the last lord of Nan had passed away. It finally became a nice national museum as we see today. The entrance fee was 20 bath of Thai and 100 baht for foreigner. This 2 storey museum presents many interesting informations about Nan, be it historical facts, inhabitants, rulers, old photos, or ancient artifacts. Highlights of the place included
1. The Monument of Phrachao Suriyaphong Pharitdet = Statue of Nan's penultimate lord who created Hor Kham stands out in front of the building.
2. Frangipani Tree Tunnel = Signature spot to take some photos.
3. Wat Noi = With only 1.98 m in width, 2.34 m in length, and 3.35 m in height, this is considered the smallest temple in the world. There's also a little Buddha statue in the centre of the temple.
4. The Black Ivory = Inherited through many generations of Nan lords, the 18 kg dark brown ivory is now considered the national treasure. The almost 100 year colorful garuda model that carries the ivory was carved out of a single teak wood.
Must visit museum.

This museum, located in a park and donated to the city by Princess Sirindhorn (younger sister of the Thai king) is well organised and includes a surprisingly large collection of prehistoric tools as well as religious and historical art. Many of the exhibits have descriptions in English as well as Thai. I would have given five stars but for the double pricing - Thais free - foreigners 20Baht. however this is even so good value for money.

This lovely old house in the heart of Nan presents a good collection of religious (Buddhist) art and folk art. The invidious two-tier pricing applies here with Thais charged THB 20 to enter and foreigners THB 100. I presented my Thai driving licence ... but was still charged the greater amount. There are some bi-lingual (Thai / English) signs on the exhibits but most have no translation: perhaps all those huge entrance fees for foreigners can be applied to provide more bi-lingual signage. Still ... certainly worth a visit ... if only for the magnificent frangipani arcade by the entrance ... and Wat Phumin is just over the road.

The thing that spoilt this visit was that all the signs had no translation into English. It was well laid our and air conditioned. Some videos were shown and the rooms were beautiful.

We started one day and had to finish the visit on the day after, yes! Not because it has lots of rooms, no, but because we started later at 3pm and the Museum closes at 4pm! And as we are Museum's addicted persons we like to see and learn every details of the History. Located in a large wide area, surrounded by beautiful and well maintained gardens, this Museum was before the Home of the Lords of Nan and by the 30's when the last Lord passed away in 1931, his family has donated the House and the all property to the Country. So, since then the Fine Arts Department decided together with the Princess to dedicate this beautiful place to Nan History and Culture.
Very well organised, it starts with the History of the Kings genealogy on the ground floor and it goes to the second floor with the transformation of the House into a Museum as it is nowadays. The strong influence of the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has been of great importance as one of her greatest goals is to ensure that Thai Culture is preserved and disclosed to all thais and visitors. This museum owns a great collection of Lanna Art, Nan Art, Sukhothai Art, Siam Art and the mixing of these with other styles from Burma and Lao that influenced the local Art and made it so rich and prosperous even today! Undoubtedly a MUST VISIT when visiting Nan city or other places around Nan Province. Art works, the amazing Story and influence of the Unique Horn (they believe to be from a 60 year old elephant in the 14th century AD) that is a symbol for Nan People and Nan Culture, the History of the handmade Buddha Statues from centuries ago until today. Let me tell you how richness I felt after this very visit to this simple but remarkable Museum :-) I strongly recommend a Visit (start in the morning, if possible) and take some photos of the surrounding areas, it has such beautiful places also to relax :-)

Situated in the heart of old Nan, this former palace of Lord of Nan province worth a short visit to understand history of Nan and most importantly to understand how the old architecture called «Gingerbread house » which inspired from European house were builted. Now the museum has some antique belonging of the lord of Nan included Black iovry. Free admission.
Ps. Do not miss a smallest temple in Thailand under the tree in front of the museum, the anecdote said that during the visit of king rama v , lord of Nan miss calculated the amout of temples in Nan by adding 1 temple more in the total number so he had to built this small temple to made the corret number. Interessting!!!
