Beautiful views, but that is about it. Nothing else to do or to see. The chalets are runned down, the children's park is overgrown by weed and long grass. The picnic sites are non-existent.

Peaceful surroundings with beautiful views of the dam and ample bird life and antelopes as well as hiking trails and also great for fishing, boating and watersport, when the weather allows. But that is about it. The reserve doesn't have anything in the way of entertainment, amenities or things to do for families with kids, but is secluded, quiet and relaxing.

Chalets however are horrendously run down with missing bathroom taps, fireplaces rusted through and clearly in dire need of maintenance. Chalets don't even have the basics for self catering such as a kettle, broom or dustpan, crockery and cutlery. Cooking utensils are non-existent and even if one had the necessary utensils the oven was disgustingly filthy. The furniture is dilapidated with upholstery lacking zippers and in serious need of a thorough cleaning. Bedding and linen is threadbare and mattresses are sagging and worn. The covered veranda is about the only worthwhile space of the entire chalet, as it has great views over the dam.

It would probably be okay for an overnight stay or perhaps a weekend, if one does not intend spending much time at the chalet. Despite the rates being relatively inexpensive, considering the lack of even the most basic requirements for a self-catering holiday, I honestly cannot say that one gets real value for money.

Overall one would probably be better off making use of the camping facilities as those seem to be much more popular and slightly better maintained. One would however be well advised to bring everything one needs, as the on-site shop is poorly stocked and the prices are generally a rip-off.

Great spot to stop with the family and have a look at the Sterkfontein Dam. Easy acess to get to the viewing point. Just becareful if you have a small car that you dont get stuck getting back onto the main road. Just a pity about the litter, so many bins around but people still just throw their rubbish on the floor.

The reserve offers camping with electricity at the caravan park (R220 per stand per night) and camping without electricity basically anywhere you'd like (R150 per stand per night). We opted to take the latter option and picked a beautiful spot right next to the dam, surrounded by grazing zebra and springboks. Around the dam there are some ablutions, which we banked on using. However, the state of these facilities were shocking. 'Run down' is an understatement. The guard at the gate gave us no warning about this and only when we drove back to enquire did he tell us to use the main facilities at the caravan park. So, we had to drive to the ablutions from the campsite when the need arose. When going for a shower late at night, it was found that the ladies bathrooms had no hot water. Only after asking the guard the next day did he advise us to use the men's facilities. The fact that you can camp where you please is lovely, but the terrible state of the facilities is quite enough to put one off.

Stunning views, beautiful weather, manageable hiking routes, wild life to enjoy. Fun family entertainment for outdoor people. The horse rides through the mountains are amazing.

Being in the place for several occasions, I only recommend it for a very short visit or half day fishing!
Facilities are in poor conditions and apparently there is no maintenance plan.

Being en route from Durban to Clarens I was advised to take R74 instead of the N3 due to endless roadworks. Decided to pop in at Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve. This was on Sunday 8th July 2019 at about midday. Place looked deserted, but I made my way towards the entrance gate into the Dam area. No one in the little boxed office at entrance. A uniformed 'guard"/attendant walked up to my car and I asked if I could go in and how much for a quick drive through. He said R100. I said too much if it is only half an hour to drive around. So he said okay then, R50. I gave him R50 but when I drove out I noticed there was no notice of a charge at the office. Was I ripped off? Is there an entrance fee?
It was stunning by the way, too windy for many birds, but saw duiker and enjoyed watching the windsurfers.
