About
The greatest of Jamaican great houses, the Rose Hall Great House has a story with all the elements of an engaging novel. Built in 1770 by John Palmer and his wife, it eventually became the residence of their grandnephew, John Rose Palmer. In 1820, Palmer married Annee, a beautiful but feisty English girl. Little did John know that his young wife possessed “black magic” powers that would eventually lead to his demise. During her reign as mistress of the plantation, Annee did away with two more husbands and countless lovers. “The White Witch of Rose Hall” has fascinated generations, and even today, there are those who claim to see Annee passing through the Great House. A candle-lit evening tour of the Rose Hall Great House is a must for visitors to Montego Bay. Your guided exploration of the former home of Jamaica’s White Witch, Annee Palmer, includes captivating and chilling stories of love, murder and mystery skillfully told by knowledgeable guides. You’re sure to feel goose bumps as these eerie tales come to life in this grand estate, where ghost sightings have been reported over the years. Tours also give historic insight into this grandest of Jamaican great houses, now beautifully restored with 18th-century decor and antiques. To conclude this fascinating adventure, you can visit the dungeon, now transformed into a tavern called Annee’s Pub. Many visitors find that the famous rum cocktail, known as “Witches Brew” helps banish the spirits of ghosts or black magic they sense still lingering in the mansion.

Great tour - not for little ones
Jul 2020
Our family did this the first day of our vacation in Jamaica. We were the last tour of the night and were the only people on our tour, so it was fun not to have to share the experience with another group. My youngest son is usually my fearless one. At the time he was 8 years old and I will say this tour REALLY scared him. At the end of the tour we were outside and I was using my flashlight to see where I was going so I wouldn't trip. The guide broke character and got spooked because of a shadow he saw with my flashlight. At that point I called it and we stopped the tour. I always look to the guides.... if they are calm, all is good. When he got freaked out it was time to put a hook in the evening.

Hi Kate! We are so happy that you had a great time with us at the Rose Hall Greathouse! We hope that on your next trip you will be able to experience the Day & Garden Tour (less scary). We are sure the little ones would not mind that tour. Thank you for choosing us and for sharing your reviews and recommendations with the TripAdvisor community.

Nice local experience of Jamaican history
May 2021
(I don't know that it was "Skip the Line" -- there was no line, we just went up to the place and bought tickets to get in.)

Had a fantastic tour of the Rose Hall Great House in May 2021 (during the pandemic.) We were staying at the Hilton Rose Hall, across Route A1, and just walked over, using golf cart paths, including a tunnel under the road (would definitely say that, if you would need to cross A1 to get there, take a cab!) The tour was $25 per person, and was personal (we didn't have to join another party.)

During the tour, you walk through the house, with the guide providing both the basic story of Annie Palmer (the White Witch) and information about the restoration of the Great House. At the end, you are taken out to the gardens, and to Annie Palmer's tomb.

What a tragic story! But only in the sense of the evil that Palmer had in her heart -- she may have been the product of a different age, but that doesn't forgive multiple murders, both of husbands, and of slaves.

Overall, a great experience of Jamaican history, and well worth the time and money!

(During the pandemic, additional steps were being taken, including temperature checks, required mask wearing, apart from outside photographs, and extra cleaning. We felt very safe.)

Beautiful Home, Spooky History
May 2021
We had an incredible time visiting the Rose Hall Great House. The home was beautiful with all the flowers in full bloom it was hard to believe all the scary things that had happened there. Our tour guide Sancha was absolutely incredible, very accommodating and informative, she was such a sweetheart and an amazing guide! I would highly recommend this experience especially with Sancha as your guide.

An entertaining time
Apr 2021 • Couples
Due to the pandemic, my husband and I were allowed to do the tour by ourselves with a tour guide. This made us feel extra comfortable not having to share our personal space with anyone. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and funny. She offered to take pictures for us and showed us all the beautiful places to take the pics. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to this historical site and the stories are definitely worth a listen. Would recommend.

Such an interesting place
Oct 2020
We stayed at the Iberostar Rose hall suites and scheduled a tour with a great driver named Michael. He showed us all over town and the first place was the Rose Hall Great House. We couldn’t enter due to COVID restrictions but we still loved driving up around there and looking around . The place is beautiful and the history there is so interesting . We will definitely visit again if it’s open during our next trip to Jamaica.

Great night tour. Highly recommended! Not for older people or children under 16
Dec 2019
My sister, niece, wife, and I went for the night tour. Very short for the price but had fun. Wife and niece were afraid little bit but nothing too serious, nevertheless, won't recommend for older people or younger than 16 who get afraid easily.

Pretty Good
We experienced this trip with a private driver by the name of Leon. He was nice enough after another excursion to run us by Rose Hall. Unfortunately night tours are not allowed right now so we didn’t get to experience the scariness. The day one there was no one inside or outside doing anything just the tour guide who was nice but seemed either tired, hot, on autopilot or a combination lol. It was still interesting nonetheless. Wish we could’ve caught it before Covid to experience what everyone speaks of. Very interesting info for sure.

Rose Hall Great House :Hauned House Tour (Night)
Sep 2019
This was such a great experience visiting the grounds at dark and listening to the stories of Annee Palmer and how she murdered her husband and lived on the estate. They have a lot of people in Character which is great and really takes you back to how it would be at the time. There certainly lots of jumps and scares throughout the evening and they take you to Annee grave site onthe grounds too. I would recommend this to all my clients visiting Montego Bay. A day tour would also bea great experience. They were collecting donations/tips at the end outside so if you want to tip you can do so there. On the way in theres also someone playing a drum that you can tip too so a few lose dollars is handy.
