I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit Mukteshwar and stay there for a week. I stayed in the small ashram which from outside is the Ram Mandir but is actually the residence and meditation site of of Swami Sansuddhananda who is the disciple of Mukteshwar Maharaj. Swamiji appears to be in a human form with all earthly attributes but from within is immersed in the infinite and connected to the mysteries of the higher worlds. His presence in that complex makes Mukteshwar a spot which is heaven in Earth. Always engulfed in mysticism, dropping in and out of samadhi, recounting stories of the Puranas, as if He was present when these divine plays were unfolding, doing havan (fire ritual) with magical mantra chanting; is his routine.

The disappointing part of the whole experience for me was, the attitude of the other people who have almost occupied the rest of the temple complex. How the villagers and other people had developed animosity towards this godly person. I was amazed to hear some of the pilgrims being told not to enter the Ram mandir as this 'Old Man" in there is a fake or a mad person! Sadly some of the pilgrims were missing out in getting a Darshan of such a holy soul and not getting any blessings from him which could have transformed their lives.

Swamiji would open the gates of the temple in the day and there would be a trickle of pilgrims who would come in to offer their prayers to the Ram darbar and some may get a darshan of Swamiji sitting on a chair. He would always bless every person and give them prashad without fail, regardless of the fact, these pilgrims offer a rupee or not as an offering.

I also heard that the misbehaviour of the locals has crossed the limits of human decency and Swamiji was actually physically beaten by some individuals. But a great soul as he is, never has a bad word for any of them. Unfortunately there is no one to look after such a person and he is all alone without any helper even to fetch a glass of water or cook or clean his place. Swamiji was trying to build a small extension to his ashram for devotees to stay but even that extension has been halted by the locals.

Swami Sansuddhananda is not like a Guru one sees in the television with huge followers who live amazing lifestyles but a true realised master who has chosen to live the life of a sanyasi but in the middle of civilization for the benefit of mankind.

Mukteshwar temple is surrounded with forest and woods which unfortunately caught fire one day and the fire almost threatened to destroy the whole complex. Although I had an urge to run but Swamiji said that the wind would change and the complex would be safe. He started to do Havan in the middle of this raging forest fire which was almost 100 yds from the temple. As if by magic the wind changed and the temple complex was saved.

This was a magical experience for me. I just hope others get an opportunity to visit Mukteshwar and get the blessings of this amazing Sadhu in our midst.

Mukteshwar gets its name from an 350-year-old temple of Shiva, known as Mukteshwar Dham, situated atop the highest point in the town, on the veterinary institute's campus. Close to it lie the overhanging cliffs, locally known as Chauli-ki-Jali, used for rock climbing and rappelling, with an excellent view of the valleys below. The sunrise point is at the government-run PWD guest house. One can also visit the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI). Mukteshwar is the abode of a saint — Shri Mukteshwar Maharaj ji — who lived at the Top Cottage Temple where his samadhi is. One of his disciples, Swami Sanshudhanand ji, now stays there. The whole temple complex is a Tapovan and an ideal place for meditation.

About 2 1/2 hours drive from Nainital about 52 kms on the north east is the hilly isolated place. There is wonderful view point of Himalayaas and a small temple dedicated to lord Shiva.
A rocky formation called chauli ki jaali, is something special.
be careful - watch your steps - your are on a cliffy rock and can't afford to slip into the deep valley

If you are traveling in Kumaon hills you can plan a stay @ Mukteshwar approximately 70 Kms. from Kathgodam: 55 kms. from Nainital. The temple is situated on a hilltop with scenic beauty all around. Spirituality is in the year one can spend many hours soaking in the peace & spiritual atmosphere.
One has to climb steps to reach the temple approximately takes 10 minutes.
Snacks are available @ parking site.
If you are religious better to go there in the morning and pray.
Nearby there is a stone peak called Jali and a selfie point stop. You will get the feeling of being all above with nothing underneath.

The temple is nice, and very mystic, some activities nearby are rockclimbing, and rappling. The height of the temple is such as you would feel on top of the world, and on clear days 360 degree views of the majestic Himalayas are there. the entire temple region is covered by dense forests, and we trekked for sometime just enjoying every part of it.

if you are going to mukteshwar this is the place it has been named after. so it becomes a must visit. the temple is at a height so it is not good for the people who cannot walk or rather climb stairs. there are about 70-80 stairs. also there is a way that leads you to this place called chauli ki jali where you can enjoy really thrilling sports
