“BUSY BUSY BUSY WITH PILGRIMS”

Hundreds of iranians and Shi'a Iraqis were arriving here for Ashura when I visited the adjacent archaeological city of Samarra. The checkpoint divides the road so you take different road for the mosque and shrine than for the famous site nearby. Patience is demanded to get through all the checkpoints and then to access the mosque on foot as parking is quite distant for security reasons.
