This museum, though rather small, is filled with historical objects from the area, and from various time periods - from Sumerian/Assyrian to yesterday. The cooperation with UNESCO has improved the presentations, and would save the objects for future generations.

This superb museum is a timeline of Mesopotamian history dating back to the Palaeolithic Age from 15,000 BC. The museum is divided into three galleries. the first hall is about craft works and daily life of Ancient Mesopotamia, the second one represents archaeological artifacts in chronological range until Classic Period, and the last one starts with that period and ends with Islamic Periodis a chronological. Most of the exhibits have Kurdish and English signs.

The museum is filled with artifacts from various periods of history.

The highlight is clearly the newly discovered tablet V of the epic of Gilgamesh.

I loved seeing these ancient items. Almost everything posted in English though some of the translations need work (i.e. children's playings = toys). Two galleries around a glassed in courtyard filled with inscription stones pulled from a vulnerable (to ISIS) monument. Be aware of the dates. Things from Sassinid period 200 to 600 CE are covered in Christan symbols but no mention is made of this due to the current Muslim sensibilities. Apparently they don't like reminding Kurds of their pre-Islamic Christian faith, but it is there if you know to look.

The museum is very small and not very well organized, however I think they have very limited funding to keep it running. However the collection itself is great and they spans several civilizations. It is well worth a visit and there are some pieces that are very unique beyond what is usually known or seen in the rest of the world about Mesopotamia. Many people mentioned that the opening times and days of the museum are few and far between, however I drove past the museum on several occasions and always saw it open, and had no problem visiting on the day I decided to go. Evidently it is important to follow Islamic weekdays and weekends for opening days.
