According to the guide on duty they do not get overwhelmed with visitors which is a great shame. Carlyle may be less remembered than say Dickens but he is a towering hero of Scottish writing & deserves better. A small house but well worth the...More

If you drive on the M74, you may see the sign that says 'Ecclefechan - Carlyle's Birthplace' but at 70mph it is soon gone and nothing more is thought of it until you pass it again. This time, I decided to visit. Thomas Carlyle the...More

Was unsure what to expect having been to the area a number of times and never thought to pop in even though we are NT members. Anyway on a wet Sunday we decided to give it a go and to say we were pleasantly surprised...More

I'd seen the sign for Thomas Carlyle's Birthday quite a few times and decided to stop by. I was the only visitor, and the guide had time to talk and give me the background information. Very interesting!

Enjoyed our visit to this National Trust for Scotland property. The guide gave us a fascinating insight in to Thomas Carlyle's upbringing and bought the house to life with his talk. Just a very small property with three rooms but we spent a very happy...More

Many times we've passed the Ecclefechan sign on the Motorway which has the Large Attached sign saying Birthplace of Thomas Carlyle. So our thoughts were give it a go. We'd not seen the village previously and knew instantly we'd missed nothing. As for the Birth...More

A very informative and friendly warden greeted us on arrival. A wonderful place - quite a 'time capsule - which was truly evocative of the man and his era.

A charming, compact and well preserved memorial to a great man; made all the more endearing by the presence of a gentleman guide who expertly espoused the history of the origins of one of Scotland’s finest. Well worth an immersion.
