A "Must-See" If You Visit Puglia
Jun 2021
The Ortranto Cathedral is one of those places where you feel transported back to another time and place. The mosaic floor was laid down in the 12th Century and it is a representation of the Tree of Life. It is the largest floor mosaic in Italy. It's truly spectacular and worth a visit.
Down below in the Crypt is the altar of Mary with the 800 Martyrs. In 1480 the Turks destroyed the cathedral and turned it into a mosque. Then in 1481, a mere year later, the Italians took back the town and turned the mosque into a cathedral again. The altar was built to remember those lost.

Even if you're tired of visiting churches, stop in this one!!
Oct 2020
Yeah, I know, a trip to Europe means many visits to many churches & oftentimes they are beautiful, but kind of look the same. This one is unique with all-tile/all-mosaic floors that were gorgeous. It also has a little side room with cases of skeletons/skulls (yes, real ones!) from a very significant event in Otranto history. It creeped my son & I out a bit, but at the same time it really moved you & made you feel the depth of this battle.

Outstanding
Oct 2020
Easily one of the most interesting churches in the entire region. The early medieval floor mozaic based on a tree of life motif is incredible and is in fantastic condition.

Outstanding floor mosaics
Sep 2020 • Solo
It’s photogenic enough from the outside, but take a moment to step through the door and the 11th Century mosaics are brilliant (far too many to photograph)’ really not seen anything quite like them....

Another "must see" of Otranto
Aug 2020
we were infested in visiting the crypt which unfortunately was closed due to COVID-19. The cathedral is renown for its beautiful mosaic floor but being a functioning church, it was mostly covered by sitting benches ... It would have been nice to leave a small portion in clear sight to be admired.

Beautiful
Oct 2019
We were there on Sunday morning and the church was full of parishioners attending Mass. Because of this we were only able to step in and view the church from a side aisle. What we saw was beautiful - a mosaic floor and rose window.

Wonderful
Sep 2019
The wonderful Cathedral of Otranto is quite amazing. The spectacular Tree of Life Mosaics of the floor are worth a detour to see!
We entered through the crypt and then up to the church proper and finished in the square in front. The bone chapel to one side was interesting with a sad story, but we have seen better.
All in all this is definately a must do in the area.

Stunning mosaics and Romanesque crypt
Oct 2019 • Friends
What a stunning find. Enter via the crypt which is pure Romanesque and a wonderful recycling of older pillars. The climb to the main body of the cathedral and just look at the floor. A vast medieval mosaic with the tree of life threading through it. Bible stories, saints, mythical beasts, signs of the Zodiac, King Arthur - amazing!

Arrive early (opens 7-12) and enjoy the place before the crowds!
Oct 2019 • Couples
The cathedral is incredible- I think one of the highlights of our entire trip- owing to the astonishing mosaic floor.
It is hundreds of feet long, tens wide and took one monk two years to make! 1163-1165 to be precise.
However, the cathedral is popular and often full of groups. Though much of the mosaic is roped off, it’s best to arrive early and enjoy in peace.
We had it pretty much to ourselves until 10.15.
The crypt below is completely different but equally stunning. 70 columns, all different, support the roof.
The opening hours are, I believe, 7-12, 3-6.
