Perched on the top of a volcanic rock which serves as a pedestal, the fortress of Polignac is the birth place of one of the most illustrious families in the history of France. The castle is not only an extraordinary sight in the landscape, it also offers a unique panoramic view of the surrounding region. Walking around the ruins of the fortress along a fascinating trail, visitors will discover a place of exceptional interest.

From the village it's a fairly short but relatively steep walk up to the fortress. Pay for the admission at the tourist office in the square before going up and they'll give you tokens for the turnstile. The tower is fantastic with access all the...More

It is a steep walk up to get to the fort but well worth the effort. It is somewhat reminiscient of Les Baux in Provence and certainly would have been an amazing stronghold. A bit cold an draughty in winter no doubt but pretty safe...More

So much to see and do! Perfect for children, games laid out to play ( adults were enjoying them too!) Interest for historians, cooks, gardeners and folk who like to walk and explore. A brilliant morning.

Charming site, not busy. The ruins are so interesting, and the lava plug-top location is unique. Great views of the surrounding valley, down to Le Puy, and south to the mountains.
