If you are on the Midlands Meander near Nottingham Road in KwaZulu Natal, then do visit the Marrakesh Cheese Farm to learn lots about cheese that you can only learn from a skilled master cheesemaker. This little factory produces 18 different varieties of cheese, from a Ricotta to a Gorgonzola type cheese, that is only available for purchase by clients visiting the cheese farm. The cheesemaker will give you instruction while tasting 12 different varieties so that you can understand how the varieties differ in taste and production. The tasting and discussion if you want takes about ten minutes.
They also offer a variety of jams and chutneys produced on their farm.
We left buying ten different packs of cheeses and jams and will be back next year.
Definitely make a visit, it is off the R103 6km north of Nottingham Road in a place called Rosetta.

The cheese tasting was delicious and informative. We learned about many different cheese making techniques and enjoyed some very tasty cheeses and preserves.

So many times I've threatened to drive the 'old road' to Kzn, South Coast and in particular the R103- the Midlands Meander.

Driving at a leisurely pace to take in all the surrounding beauty, we came across MERRAKESH CHEESE. The owner walked to the shop and greeted us as we arrived, advising we are about to spend the next 20 to 30 minutes tasting their offering of cheeses.

The gastrnomic tour included how and when cheeses are made, flavoured, what's added, when, why they opt to live here and more. All exceptionally interesting. In the end we left knowing a little more about the cheese making process.

At the end we drove out with our selection of MERRAKESH cheese, that we would savour and eat while watching the ocean from our balcony.

Next time take a turn off the N3 and be sure to make this stop in the Rosetta area, part of your journey.

Walked away with some delicious cheese and was greeted and helped by a very pleasant and knowledgeable lady who runs the farm with her husband .

However there is a lot more that could be done in the little shop . Walls are falling apart , paint peeling , no where to sit .. tasting was done standing over the counter .
While nothing is wrong with the set up it does leave much to the imagination .

The drive way up is treacherous however . Not a fun drive .

But probably the most notable thing of the visit was the lack of hygiene standards during the tasting!! Very concerning , especially considering the current Covid 19 outbreak but , concerning even under normal circumstances .

If you want some food cheese then I’d say pass by but don’t have high expectations of you’re hoping to have a relaxing/inviting setting to do a tasting.

If you are taking the meander through this area, definitely stop at this cheese place. The owners will give an interesting tasting session and explain the different cheeses. They are all for sale at very reasonable prices.
If you love cheese, you will enjoy the samplings of about 8-10 different cheeses.

Marrakesh is a fun little diversion. We stopped in on a whim, and joined some other travelers in a tasting and learning experience. The friendly owner gave us an overview of the cheese making process, and specific things he does to suit his own tastes. The cheeses run the gamut from a farmers/ricotta style to more aged and harder cheese. They also sell homemade preserves and other items. Well worth a visit.
