The new exhibition of the Greek painter Gounaropoulous is very interesting and touching.
The donated paintings from his family in Athens is a real treasure for Sozopol -his birth place.
Very worthy to be visited.

After the exhibition of his artworks organised in his native town in 1996, Gounaropoulos returns to Sozopol at the beginning of June 2023, with a permanent exhibition at the Municipal Art Gallery.

One of the rooms of Sozopol’s old school has been renovated to accommodate the works that the artist’s granddaughters, Maria and Despina Gounaropoulou, donated to the Municipality of Sozopol in the spring of 2023.

'My town is called Sozopolis—we used to call it Zopoli—and it is located on the Black Sea in Bulgaria. It was built on a high rocky coast that looks like a long and narrow tongue.
I reminisce about Sozopol when I want to understand what art and obsession are, how possessed I am to apply in my artistic activity that which exists and is not visible.’

These reflections of Giorgos Gounaropoulos’ (1889–1977), expressed on Athens Radio in 1972, still echo in the memories of some of the elderly Sozopolians.

They knew that a famous artist had been born in their small seaside town, had gained recognition in Paris while still a young man, and had established his place among the most prominent Greek artists of his time; but they also knew that, after leaving Sozopol at the beginning of the 20th century, he never returned to his paternal abode again.

‘The more a person ages, the more he returns to his childhood visions’, said Gounaropoulos, whose oeuvre expresses the triumph of the light. Its sources, ‘the living feeling, which is most important in painting’, he sought and found in Sozopol.

The lady from the entrance is very helpfull, she knows a lot, about the artists and the works shown in exhibition. At the time of our visit it is along of bulgarian contemporan painters an exhibitions with photos of old Szozopol from 1940-1960 or even older. It was very interesting to compare the nowaday s streets with the old ones. And the Art Gallery building itself it is special. It worth a walk

Really nice gallery, small but interesting. Aside from commercial streets with tourist souvenirs, we were almost the only tourists there. I liked the paitings from Bulgarian artist on the groundfloor, they seem to be living due to their plasticity, motives with fish, ships, nice colors and intersting way of painting. You could turn a painting and everytime you can see something different. There are other pictures with Sozopol panorama and some macrophotos of sea fauna. It is situated in an old building of former school with nice view on the bay of Sozopol.

We visited Sozopol in the middle of October and only small number of museums is open this time of the year but still, there is plenty to see. Town Art Gallery was one of them. It is situated in an old school building, which is a cultural landmark from 19th century. We were the only visitors until a Russian couple walked in. The lady at the gallery who welcomed us told us about her time at school as a pupil. She remembered how the school changed over the years and when it became a gallery.

The exposition itself was created in 1985. Set over two floors, it has paintings of Bulgarian and foreign artists. Notable is the collection “Old Sozopol” of local marine artists such as Yani Hrisopoulos. There was also a modern art from art students who were showing some interesting ideas such as the sculpture “Happiness in glass”.

Highly recommended!

What a wonderful gem in Sozopol. The place is light and airy and has two floors of paintings. The time we visited there was an artist there who kindly gave us a guide of his first ever exhibition.

There is both a permanent exhibition (several paintings and art objects) and periodically changing exhibitions, including an international exhibition dedicated specifically to Sozopol, updated every year. The exhibitions, which have been hanging for several years, deteriorate every year; in general, the gallery gives a rather neglected impression. Small concerts and literary performances are held (in particular, as part of the Apollonia international festival). Excellent views from the windows and from the open terrace behind the museum are a great opportunity to beat the heat of the day. Adult ticket 3 levs, open until 18:00 every day.
