- Sean BVancouver, Washington4 contributionsIsolated luxury and expert guidesI spent four days at Dwyka Tented Lodge within Sanbona in late September. The experience can best be described as luxury set in extreme isolation. The individual "tents" are lovely, comfortable and a short walk to the larger lodge where meals are served and activities coordinated. Staff is gracious and helpful. Food is delicious. Wildlife drives, of course, are the highlight. Guides (Ethan, Josh and others) are tracking experts - adept at spotting the animal residents of the reserve. During my stay the Western Cape experienced a massive wind and rain storm which caused significant flooding throughout Sanbona. I was impressed with how staff stepped up and assisted guests through the experience of washed out roads and swollen rivers. - BendigoMom59 contributionsA fabulous experience!During our two-night stay at Sanbona Nature Reserve, we watched a family of elephants browsing among the acacia for their breakfast (including a big bull who came right over to say hello!), springbok bouncing along in front of our vehicle, gemsbok flying across the road, young male giraffes play-fighting, baboons descending from the cliffs at sunrise, a lion "calling for his ladies" (in the words of our guide, Jan), and many other iconic birds and animals of South Africa — all set against the most spectacular landscape we have ever seen. Jan went out of his way to track down a family of cheetahs, and we walked quite close to them as they basked and cuddled in the sun. The staff at Tinley Manor created an unforgettable experience for us, from the outstanding meals to the lovely and spacious accommodations. They even arranged our transportation from Cape Town and back. When we returned after the game drives, they greeted us with hot towels. On our first night they served dinner for us poolside, where lanterns and a fire pit cast a cozy aura all around. Michael, one of our favorite staff members, regaled us with stories and made us feel especially welcome. The guides are so knowledgeable and the other staff are the best at what they do. We felt so spoiled and saw the most beautiful animals in their natural setting. We had a wonderful 3 night 4 day stay at Dwyka Tented Lodge : but don’t be confused by tented... Only the roof is like a tent canopy. It’s 5 star game reserve luxury with a private view deck and jacuzzi at each room.
In an incredibly special setting, and after a short 3 hour drive from Cape Town you enter a new world. Scrubby bush, arid plains, spectacular night skies of trillions of stars. Lots of traditional game you’d expect but also wonderful rarely spotted animals like the brown hyena, with a close and upfront sighting.
Our ranger Nico was outstanding. Keen, engaged and very knowledgeable. The staff are very friendly & professional. Rooms spotless and food was all absolutely delicious.
Highly highly recommended!!

This is a tough review to write !!
Firstly the lodge – Dwyka - absolutely brilliant – hard to find fault because there were none ! The bed was so comfortable – 5 a.m rise even harder out of it !! The layout of the suite, the balcony and the whirlpool – being really picky would have preferred a plunge pool – cheaper on power ! – were all great.
Secondly the staff – superb – from Marco , our so enthusiastic, knowledgeable guide through to the guys at base – Leancha, Anje & Janice. All looked after our needs so well and made us really welcome.
Thirdly the food – top notch and a great selection bearing in mind their isolation. Great choice of wines as well. Whilst not a barbecue person have to admit the braai was really good . The chef marshalled everything so well.
Fourthly the actual reserve – it is huge & the scenery is stunning and breathtaking.
Now the hard bit ! As a result of the drought that the area has endured it means grazing animals are of a premium and following on from that so are the predators that need them – the big cats are a rarity.
As regular and seasoned safari goers we fully understand that you don’t want or expect animals to line up to be pictured but because of the arid, desert like conditions you can drive for literally miles and not see anything and I mean anything !
Of course none of this can be helped and whilst I am highlighting it I feel so sorry because I know Marco, the other rangers & all the staff would love to see rain and more animals on the reserve.
The sightings we did get – cheetah, elephants, white rhino, kudu, giraffes & fighting zebras were brilliant.
With the knowledge of the dry conditions but taking everything else into consideration I have to recommend Dwyka & Sanbona because of the people and the lodge.
Please give them some rain – just not while we are there !! – keep it up guys and good luck with the Black Rhinos !

Dear Mike
Thank you for your very kind and fair review. Yes, we are indeed facing our own set of challenges and now to compound matters, a global virus, but we hope that along with the rest of many wildlife and animal sanctuaries dotted around South Africa - and the world - that we too witness a healing of our 'little' slice of the Karoo.
We are delighted that you enjoyed Dwyka and that the team looked after you so well. We are indeed fortunate to have them.
Best wishes during this time of uncertainty and please do stay safe.
Kindest regards
The Sanbona Team

First I was a bit reluctant, private game reserves are often big zoos rather than wild. But Sanbona is different, the emphasis is on wildlife conservation, something that our guide Jordan brought across to us. I have learned a lot. And the staff at Dwyka Tented Camp are great, thanks again Janice.

We stayed at Dwyka tented lodge for three nights at the end of September.
Wonderful Sanbona, a private concession, managed the South African way with a view based upon conservation and giving people to opportunity to see wild animals at close quarter.
Very enjoyable overall experience, very good game viewing, especially with white Rhino, elephants, walking close to giraffe and an incredible experience, walking close and viewing 4 cheetahs(1 year old) cubs and their mother- beautiful.
After recent heavy rainfall which did not impact on our safari we were blessed to see so much colour as wild flowers appeared everywhere in abundance.

Hi, We are wanting to visit Sanbona in Sept, flying from California. I am thinking we should stay in Cape Town for a few nights to get over the jet lag.
Does this sound like a good idea? Do you recommend CapeTown as part of the adventure?
Also, not too important, but are you allowed to bring our own alcoholic beverages in to the lodges? Thanks,

All Sanbona's rates are full board, inclusive of: daily morning and evening nature drives, guided wilderness walks, all meals, non-alcoholic beverages, on-drive beverages, VAT and tourism levy. Unfortunately, we do not offer day drives on the reserve. Sanbona has three unique luxury accommodation options to choose from, each of them with their own very distinct design and appeal. If you would like to contact our Reservations team we will happily draw up a detailed quotation for your convenience. Thank you, the Sanbona team.

I am planning a trip to Cape town and Sanbona for June, from the 16th to 26th. Thing is, I have heard that it is rainy season and I wonder if anyone has experienced staying at Sanbona when it rained. I
wonder if there are game drives, if it is possible to see any animals at all. I am worried because for such a pricey experience, I would be disappointed if I stayed there for a couple of night, forking out quite a lot of money, and had no chance to even do a game drive.... any thoughts? really appreciate your input

Written 16 December 2018
We had a hire car, not a 4wd, and it was fine to drive the track in, we had people staying at the same place who also drove in(vw golf) and a also saw a BMW sedan on the track. It's a little bit bumpy but you are not driving fast anyway and there is a 40km/hr limit. I would say the only time you may have a problem is if it is very wet otherwise I'd drive in.
