This small bird sanctuary is situated in the middle of town, but hosts a large variety of birds.

With a half decent camera, the avid photographer can get some great, close up shots, especially when the birds come in to roost..

There is a shaded hide with benches for books, cameras and binos.

Don't expect anything big & fancy - this is just one of the quaint features that makes Montagu so special!

Lovely deck to sit on and view the birds feeding their chick and basically just living their life.
Yes, it does smell a bit, but what would you expect from a heronry.

The dam could do with a bit of a clean up.

Worth a visit and will pop around again when back in town.

Loads of African Sacred Ibis in the trees and flying around - space a bit of a problem on the trees!
Lots of Egrets and Weaver birds.
Lovely tranquil setting - very pretty.
Big shaded viewing platform was fabulous in the 36 degree heat.

A place not to be missed if you stop in Montagu. It will take you only 5 minutes and it is very close to the center of town. It is quite impressive to see all these birds packed in a small area.

If you love birds, this is an experience. They are free to fly off and come back. Wonderful to see them in a free environment.

What an awesome place to see wild birds in their natural habitat up close. An excellent photo opportunity for the keen birder.

An open pond centrally situated in Montagu, opened I think in 2009.A haven for wading birds such as egrets and mainly the Noticeable sacred Ibis who nest noisily in the surrounding tree tops. a hide gives good cover and photo opportunities.. Now and again (if lucky) a Hadeda Ibis with it's unique mournful cry will fly low overhead,, my favourite bird, As with Montagu, the best things are free it proves!

Just opposite St Mildred's Chapelry is this well constructed hide at the edge of the Leidam - quite useful to novices as pictures and descriptions of the most commonly found birds are displayed. The biggest birds we saw there, the sacred Ibis, seemed unpeturbed by people viewing them, but the other birds were a bit more difficult to spot. I am still quite amazed that this bird sanctuary should be in the middle of an urban area, even if it happens to be situated in tranquil Montagu.

This bird sanctuary is quite extraordinary. A whole block on the main street full of hundreds of birds nesting and squawking. Just walk by and watch
