Go for a trip to Cap-Haitian, the 2nd city of Haiti. It's better if you have a private car. Then, from Cap-Haitian you continue to Milot, a small town on the way to Hinche, Pleateau Central but it's interior a bit. In Milot lies the church with black dome, then the palace of the first Haitian King: Henri Christophe. From Milot, we claimed the hill on horseback to the citadelle It is considered as the 8th wonder of the world by the haitian, built to protect the northen of haiti safe from an eventual return of the french colonizer after the war for the Haitian independence

On a mission trip to Haiti in the early 80's, (wasn't able to select that date from the pulldown menu) this was one of the "breaks" we took on one day of sight seeing. Wow. We took a taptap (riding on TOP of a VW Microbus) to the Citadelle, then took the ride on a mule up the steep narrow mountain path. Absolutely worth taking time to see.

I went to the Citadel on a mission trip with Good Shepherd Ministries Dec 2004. It is a long walk from the parking lot so give yourself time and bring water. We used a guide named Napoleon Duplin which the locals know as a well known guide. He is wonderful, speaks good English, and knows his history. It is best to hire a guide to avoid the locals you will pass along the way from pestering you to hire them. Tickets to see the Citadel I think are $10US now and Napoleon will need a horse about $5 and he requests a small fee for his guidance I think around $10-$20. It just unimaginable to think of what resources they had to build the Citadel and how large it really is.

The Citadelle is the most beautiful palace I have ever seen. I encourage anyone visiting Haiti should go and see the Citadelle. You will be amazed of the story of "how and why the palace was built. The people around are very friendly. Seeing the Citadelle will make you want to to learn about Haiti's history, which is extremely fascinating. The country overall is so beautiful. The Citadelle should be one of the greatest wonder of the World. If anyone interested, a tour can be arranged e-mail me a jrguillet@yahoo.com

We visited the Citadelle a couple of years ago. Over the years, I have seen many pictures, but no picture could describe the awesome view. It started with viewing it from a distance as we were driving. The ride up the mountain on the donkey was fantastic. It was just a fantastic feel to look out at the wonderful mountains of Haiti from the top of the Citadelle. I couldn't believe I was standing up so high. Now whenever I see a picture of the Citadelle, I feel a certain sense of pride as I look at the picture and can relate to areas at the very top that I have stood....Can't wait to go back again this year.

I visited La Citadelle in 1999, two days after a hurricane. As a result, there were very few tourists and my self and my husband were two of not more than half a dozen visitors that day. We made the trek up on small horses. I recommend either using this mode of transport or hiking to fully appreciate the experience and scope of this endeavor.
It is an awe inspiring journey from the base at Sans Soucis to the top.
Approximately 5 km of a winding twisting cobbled road, with small settlements interspersed along the route. Coffee beans were spread along the path to dry and fresh oranges were offered to the traveller for very reasonable prices along the way. We went with a guide, but found that there were other guides at the summit who perhaps had a more intimate knowledge of the Fortress. La Citadelle is generally in good repair due to UNESCO funding. It is an integral part of Haiti's early history and well worth a visit. Unemployment is very high in Haiti -- Don't be a cheap skate when given an opportunity to support the local economy. I plan a return trip in February 2003 as part of the research for my second novel which is set in Haiti.

I visited La Citadell in the 80's, It had stood for almost 200 years as of then. We drove to the parking lot and walked camera in hand the remainder. It was exausting at 11 am. I was a diver and in very good shape. So, if you go, take your time, it's on of the most impressive places I've seen in the 20 or 30 countries I've visited in my lifetime.
The immensity of the place is overpowering. Our 2 lb camera was all we wanted to carry, but seeing thousands of 40 lb cannon shot all over and the hundred 16ft guns leaves one in awe.

In the north of Haiti is the most wonderful historical monument of the country. Built and inhabited by King Henri christophe, after the division of the country, the citadel remains and remains the greatest wonder of all times for the Haitians. It is a plain fortress of secrecy. You who want to travel a little in time, I propose you a small guided visit to the citadel. You will not be disappointed.

HI Mireusen,
Did you use a tour company to see the Citadel? Were you on a cruise?
How long did it take?
Thanks, Sonya

Hi Michelle, We are going to visit the Citadelle next week and I wanted to know if there is a rail on the steps to hold on to as my elderly parents are going on the tour with us.

what is a good tour company to use to go to the Citadel from Labadee?
Written 31 July 2018
Contact Voyages Lumiere in Port-au-prince. It is run by Jacqui a wonderful Englishwoman who has lived there for 20 years. Easy via Google. I am sure she can sort you out. Mention that you got the recommendation from Oliver and Sue! Good idea to get out of Labadee which gives no idea of an extraordinary country. Good luck.

Which tour companies will collect me from Labadee RC beach for a tour to the Citadelle? I can't find any information online, and I really don't want to just sit on the RC beach when I can meet Haitians and see a bit of the country and culture.

The government of Haiti is working on giving access to RC for excursions outside of Labadee Cruise Ship Area. One of the projects is a cable car to the Citadel. In the meantime, we recommend joining come2haiti via a 10 day tour with G Adventures. If you want to better experience Haiti is for you to spend a few days rather than a few hours.

Hi Arhtur, howlongis the hike up onhorseback, I am afraid of heights...anyrecommendations?
Written 25 January 2018
The citadelle is 3,000 ft up the top of a mountain. I am not sure there is any way to avoid heights if you want to get to the top of it

Would love to visit, how far is this from Decameron Haiti or Port Au Prince? Driving time ? Thanks in advance?
Written 17 January 2018
My wife and I just drove from Moulin Sur Mer (beside Decameron) to Cap Haitian to visit the Citadelle and then drove back to port au Prince.
From the Decameron it can vary from between 3.5 and 5 hours, depending on traffic and whether many vehicles are broke down. There is some construction along the road as it is being improved. Coming back on early Sunday morning we drove Cap Haitian to Port au Prince in 5 hours exactly.
The road from Port au Prince to past Gonaive is quite good paved highway, and then there is some gravel for a ways, and then a pavement again going into Cap Haitian, but it has a few potholes.
If you are comfortable on gravel, it is not too difficult a drive. I have driven far worse roads in both Canada and Haiti.

Sicherheitslage meines Erachtens unbedenklich (ohne Gewähr !). 5 Reisetage einplanen. Übernachtung in Pétionville. Am fünften Tag Rückreise nach RepDom, wieder mit Sans-Souci-Tours-Bus, nach Santo Domingo (andere Route wie Hinweg: über Grenzübergang Belladère RH-Comendador Elías Piña DOM im Landesinneren statt Jimaní DOM-Malpasse RH nahe der Südküste. … Ich wünsche eine schöne Reise.
