We attended Easter mass at St Augustine by the Sea Roman Catholic Church. The church and service were beautiful and meaningful. The priest came in wearing sandals but took them off during the mass. The music provided by a man playing the piano and singing was so poignant. A palm fond was used to sprinkle holy water on attendees. This is a traditional Easter practice in all Catholic Churches on Easter. The church itself is an A-frame modernistic design and has a copper-covered roof. There are twenty magnificent stained-glass windows depicting the history of the Catholic Church in Hawaii. As you walk into the church, you can help but be awed with how interior’s wooden beams seem to flow from the floor to the ceiling. Near the entrance is a side altar dedicated to Father Damien, the priest who worked with the lepers on Molokai. A small courtyard is filled with native flowers and a statue of St. Augustine. I would suggest getting their early to find a parking space in their small parking lot.

Beautiful Church and an excellent priest. The music during the post Christmas season was fantastic and the music director has a magnificent voice. Recommend to anyone looking for a great mass along the shore.

The church is right off the beach. I was sad that it was not open at 9:00am. There were several others wanting to go inside.

If you take a moment to look beyond the tall buildings you will find this beautiful church in the heart of busy Waikiki. We attended a pleasant and enjoyable mass at St. Augustine by-the-sea last Sunday. The congregation was a mixture of locals and tourists with a visiting celebrant from Connecticut. There was a wonderful message delivered about people truly seeing each other. I was truly impressed with the Tongan Choir. They did a wonderful job with providing uplifting music to the congregation. A special Mahalo to the guitar player who was so kind to take a photo with my son after mass. Visiting St. Augustine by-the-sea was an uplifting way to begin our day in beautiful Waikiki. I am happy that we visited such a warm and inviting place.

One of my favorite Churches, the 06:00 Mass on Sunday’s is so peaceful and not crowded as the other schedules, so you might want to try this one and start your day earlier.

If you don't associate Waikiki with going to church - drop by St Augustine -by-the-Sea on Kalakaua Avenue corner Ohua Street (right across from Waikiki Beach/ Beaufiul Catholic masses every day at 7:00 am (except Mondays). Confession times are posted outside the church. Hawaiian chanting and music are incorporated in the 12 noon mass; and Sunday 5:00 pm mass has a Tongan choir with folks in full Tongan attire. Impressive! Mass attendees are a combinatio of visiting tourists and local residents .

Can you tell me what the decorative items are flanking the Jesus Crucifix on the back wall behind the altar is???
They are prompted up by what to seem to be vases of some kind, and there are two of these on each side of the altar..

Hawai’i is the only state that has had a King and Queen, Royalty.
They are wooden Poles that have cylinders covered in yellow and red feathers. The color is representetive of the Hawaiian royalty and people. I believe a symbol like the American flag. They are present in the Royal Palace and many buildings.

We did eat at LuLu's. It is close to the church. It was good service and good food. Good price for the amount of food. I would eat there again.

We are planning our Christmas visit to Honolulu. Do you know what the Christmas eve and Christmas Day Mass schedule will be?

I called the church for you tonight, at 1-808-923-7024 and got the answer to your question on a voice recording:
-- Christmas Eve masses are at 6 pm, 9 pm, and 12 pm.
-- Christmas Day masses are at 6 am, 8 am, 10 am, and 5 pm. Please note that I called at 10:35 pm in California tonight when it was 8:35 pm Honolulu time so I got the recorded message. (Hawaiian Islands do NOT observe Daylight Savings Time changes.) The recorded message said to Press 2 for the Mass Schedule, which I did. Then I pressed 4 for the Christmas Mass Schedule. I would advise calling the church just before Christmas to make sure you have the most current information AND to ask when the Tongan choir will be singing -- the singing is a beautiful addition to the regular church service and will delight your senses. It almost brought me to tears.
The church is located at 130 Ohua Avenue. Ohua Avenue is perpendicular to Kalakaua Avenue that runs though the heart of the Waikiki area. I recall the church being across the street from the big Marriott Hotel. There is another building fronting Kalakaua Avenue in front of the church, so you have to enter off Ohua Avenue.
Church has a website. Web site date is 2013, so you may want to call the church to ensure you have up-to-date information.
Enjoy yourselves in Oahu.

Does the Tongan Choir sing only during certain Masses on Saturday and Sunday? Which days/times?
