About
Many of Hawaii’s alii (royalty) lived in Waikiki and King Kalakaua selected a 300-acre track of land at the base of Diamond Head for a public park in 1867. Today, it is a gathering place that thrives with walkers, runners, tennis enthusiasts and picnickers. Grab lunch on Kalakaua Avenue and enjoy it in one of the shaded picnic areas scattered around this colorful park.

We found the park by accident. We wanted to see Waikiki Beach and drove past the beach - looking for parking - right into Kapiolani Park where we found a free parking lot. It was too far (for us in our 60’s with bad backs) to walk to Waikiki, so we walked through the park to the nearby Aquarium. The park is just beautiful. Kudos to the Hawaiian government for dedicating this gorgeous piece of real estate to the enjoyment of its people. I have been to many city parks around the world, and this is one of the loveliest ones. And it’s huge. I loved walking through it, seeing the view of Waikiki, the statue of Queen Kapiolani, the banyan trees, people relaxing on the grass and playing ball on the ball fields.

During the weekend there are lots of people playing on that park. Lots of people jog in the side walk. It is located bellow Diamond Head and near Waikiki, and is the terminal location for the Honolulu Marathon. I used to play soccar when I was young, and one day as I was resting on the side, I saw a big shadow behind me. It was Wilt Chamberlain, a legend basketball player and a sports fan.

My daughter was in the middle of track season and we enjoy running together. She is much faster than me and the park is perfect for running a couple of laps (it's 2 miles if you go all the way around) at different paces. It's also easy to take the road out to the lighthouse and the eastern beaches without running so fat that you don't have energy for the rest of your island activities.

We visited this park with some friends for a July 4 picnic.

It is a beautiful park, with plentiful birds. I saw a red-crested cardinal for the first time.

It has large grassy fields and cool trees, including a large banyan tree.

Excellent park within walking distance to most hotels in Waikiki. Very clean, spacious, bathrooms clean too. Nice for morning walks/jogging. Tennis courts available as well. Plenty benches to catch a breath. Amazing views of the diamond head mountain and the hills to the north.

The Kapiolani Park is an older park on the east end of Waikiki. It is a lovely large park with beautiful trees and flowering bushes. It is right off Waikiki Beach, so a delightful, relaxing place to sit and enjoy the ocean waves coming in. Many sit, walk and run throughout this park. All the parks are so beautiful with palm trees!! Favorite part of the warm, sunny visit to Honolulu!!

Kapi'olani spelled the proper Hawaiian way
was a Queen of Hawaii back in the 1800's

Kapi'olani Park name for her as many aspects
such as space and roominess to give the
tourist a breath of fresh air, swim on the beach
visit the zoo, see Artists at work and local
ohana (families) and clubs playing and
having fun. or attend Concerts at the Waikiki Shell
or lots of cultural activities at the Gazebo.

I, being a Kama'aina (long-term Resident of O'ahu)
have been to the park numerous times.
Visitors will not be disappointed in visiting the Park.

...throughout the park, disguised really well.
It seems when the grass cutter runs over the holes, the grass is cut to the exact same height as the surrounding area. The hole I stepped in, was 4" at least. I wen' huli...
I would like to point this out to someone who is in charge, and is not going to pass it off by saying, "WELL, our budget is being cut...."
It may be cut, but as a taxpayer I don't want someone sueing and costing the taxpayer more money.

This is my favorite beach park in Waikiki for a number of reasons. One big reason is the very nice grass and trees that provide shade when it's hot outside. Bring a couple of chairs and sit on the grass under a nice shade tree and you can be very comfortable even on a hot day.

The sand is not wonderful here as much of it has eroded but it's pretty. The little jetty offers some excellent snorkeling along both sides especially the right hand side as you phase out to the ocean. Although they shouldn't do it. Often tourists throw bread into the water which makes the fish go crazy. If you are snorkeling while this is happening it can be pretty funny and a little bit scary as the fish, some of which are up to 3 feet long go into a schooling frenzy. But don't worry, like pretty much all fish everywhere with the possible exception of barracuda and sharks, they really aren't interested in people. They like the bread and they won't even nibble at you.

It's a pretty wonderful go pro opportunity when they go crazy like that.

Another thing that's great about this beach is parking. You can actually drive to this beach and find parking along the main street. There's also parking a little bit ways up at the zoo for a dollar an hour. So if you're driving from someplace on the other side of Waikiki or Honolulu this is an excellent beach to come to.

There is also a nice café here at the beach and there are plenty of showers along the walkway as well as bathrooms. This beach is typically much less crowded than some of the other main Waikiki beaches.

For a hot day when you're driving this beach can't be beat. Especially if you want some decent snorkeling in Waikiki.
