Imagine over 500 colourful hot air balloons rising up at dawn over the New Mexico landscape… there's truly nothing like it. The place to experience it is each October at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Spectators and balloon pilots from all over the world gather (some even camping in their caravans) to watch the mass ascensions held in the mornings, and night events like the 'glowdeo'. Music stages are set up during the day and performers stroll through the festival crowds, which can number 750,000 people.

An absolute must is to attend “Dawn Patrol” and “Mass Ascension”. It is impossible to take a bad picture unless you photograph your shoes. Make sure to arrive no later than 0500. Enjoy!

We finally made it down to see the evening Glowdeo that happens every night of the festival. It was my first time attending the evening show. Unfortunately, winds were about 15mph so they called off the Glowdeo (where they inflate the ht air balloons) but...More

You have to get there by 430 in the morning. But it’s so worth it. Great fun! Very cold. Next time I’ll remember the hot packs for my boots & hands.

Wake up EARLY & see the Dawn Patrol & Mass Ascension : It's the best part of the ballon festival. Dress warmly, because it can be chilly (40-50s) before the sun is up! Do not worry about bringing a blanket or chairs for the morning...More

Never dreamed I’d actually make it to the balloon Fiesta but 2017 was it! We took an RV and parked at the Balloon Camping area. Tightly squeezed in and once parked you can’t drive the RV back out again. We discovered Uber because we never...More

Always wanted to go to the Hot Air Balloon Festival at Albuquerque and made it this year. Wasn't disappointed at all. The event was organized, had lots to do, and we were able to see first hand how the balloons were prepped, and hot air...More

And then you'll figure out where they'll land! There are over 500 balloons in this, the worlds largest, which takes place in early October. And attracts 1M visitors! But if you're smart, you can avoid the colossal traffic jams at the 5-6am start, by positioning...More

I felt so fortunate to attend the Ballon Festival twice last week. We went to the Ballon glow on Sunday night-beautiful and exciting! Then we rose at 4 am to drive out to the festival for the Mass Launch at 7 am. What a beautiful...More

Like a lot of people, this was on my bucket. When the weather is right, so is the festival. The problem is, the communication about what to do, how to do it, and whether the balloons will fly is hard to find or figure out....More

Hi, thank you for your question. A mass ascension is when all 500 + balloons take flight. Other sessions may feature fewer balloons, but are just as impressive, as there are still many balloons that launch. One of the... More
