Newly constructed steps make the ascent easy. Did with my 3 yr old hiking and 1 yr old strapped to me. Really great views all along the way and around the crater top. Went at 6pm only a couple people there. Great panoramic views/pictures!

If you had experience with a crater, don't bother, its an ordinary crater with no water. Otherwise its worthwhile to see if you had never seen a crater before. But be very careful in Iceland especially in winter. The staircase might be wet and icy, as most scenic places had no fence or guard, precaution is important because not too many people around.
