It's a challenge to get there, but well worth it! There is a very rugged road to get to the parking area (takes about 15 minutes because you can't go over 5 mph. Then it's a bit of a walk through the lava field, but...More

Access to the beach is a very rough rock road. Take it slow and your rental car will do just fine. First beach, Mahai'ula is a short walk from the first parking area. No water and just portapotties. Continue on the road and you come...More

This one is right next to famous and hard-to-get Makalawena beach. Its very very beautiful, calm and not too crowded, since you have to drive a decent amount on very rough lava field just to get there. Shallow waters, plenty shades.

This beach is located in a state park so you would think there would be a paved road to get to it; but there's not. If you don't mind driving over a very unimproved road, most of the way, you will be rewarded with a...More

Amazing beach for a relaxing day. Not very many people and has nice shade from the trees. One of my favorite stops on our trip.

This one is a little off the beaten path and a little bit of a rough ride but well worth it. Take the whole family or just a romantic escape. Beware there are no bathrooms. Absolutely stunning views and crystal clear water. I will most...More

If you are visiting and looking for an off-the-beaten-path spot this is fine for a sandy beach. Don't go if you are looking for waves for any reason: bodyboarding, surfing, bodysurfing - not going to happen. It can get very crowded with tourists and locals...More

No a taxi would not go here. My suggestion would be to visit Hapuna Beach Park. It is further away from Kona but a great beach day and doesn't require a walk.
