A very nice drive from Hilo to Kona. The scenery changes as we drove from Hilo. We started with rain along the forested road. As we ascended higher, the forest gave way to shrubs. As we reach the pass, the sky began to clear up...More

It seemed to take a long time for saddle road to finish but the results are beautiful and it saves so much time to get to kona. The fog can be heavy in the afternoons so turn your lights on!

First time I’ve driven the ‘new’ saddle road. Great road and cuts the travel time from Lona to Hilo in half. Very interesting terrain between two giant volcanoes.

Actually got to see the tops of mauna kea and loa from the saddle road. The saddle was above the clouds. It is amazing the difference in the weather between the east and west sides of the island.

We took this on the way back to Kona after a scenic drive of the North Coast. It was a newly paved surface and very interesting drive through the lava flows.

Really cool road but be advised no gas on this road. No stores either. You will see the military there. This is road to Maua Kea.

Beautiful highway withnso many ecosystems. Going from the west ...seeing the vog and dry desert like conditions. Travel over the summit and see native plants, cold weather, rain and clouds. Amazing drive! Nice, easy drive to Hilo town!

Yes, it saves about an hour. It is safe and on the day we drove, absolutely beautiful and clear. The landscape changes so much from east to west!
