The saddle road is a perfectly good highway across the state now, and rental car companies no longer forbid you from using it. Good views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. No gas stations.

This road has been greatly improved in the past 5 years and much safer than in the past. Smooth drive and great views!

Our friends information was way outdated about the saddle road. It is a newer, excellent highway that is the quickest road from Kona to Hilo/Volcano Park. Not much traffic even over the Christmas holidays. It was interesting landscape between the volcanoes.

I loved this road. It is an unusual view of the island that many do not see. We traveled during day and night many times and noticed different things each time.

Saddle road is a pleasure to drive now that the paving work is done. Gone are the scary narrow rutted road that rental car companies made tourists promise not to take. Watch the speed limits though, it’s so smooth it’s easy to go fast and...More

Yes, it saves about an hour. It is safe and on the day we drove, absolutely beautiful and clear. The landscape changes so much from east to west!
