Drove here to see fishermen in old style form. Also to see old fishing village. Enjoyed it. The drive down through the lava flow was worth it. Lots to see.

We visited the second beach at Miloli'i. It was a black sand beach, spectacular setting, good snorkelling and great swimming. Easy access to the beach once you reach it. Go to the end of the road, when you reach the volleyball court and yellow church you are there. Drive through the village slowly and be friendly - the locals were very friendly with us but apparently some tourists drive fast and act snobby and receive the treatment they deserve! Walk to the right of the yellow church, ignore the 'don't trespass' signs as they aren't meant for tourists. Walk about five minutes and you'll see a little cove, sandy beach - nice but don't bother stopping! Walk to the far end, follow the yellow paint and take another 15 minute walk through the lava and forest - you'll reach the beach and it is worth it! Beautiful and secluded - we spent our time there and had the beach to ourselves!

I have been twice to Miolii. The first time was in 2006 on our way back from HIlo I wanted to find the park to have a lunch at and maybe take a dip. If you are not familiar with the town it can be very initimidating as it is the opposite of the fancy and overly developed hotels north of Kona town. What I did not know then is that the state park/beach and tide/fishing pool are at the end of the road. The first time we found what we thought was a park with an ocean view but it must have been someones land - we managed to have a picnic but did not make it to the park. Ignore the no tresspassing signs and keep going until you find the little church. all the beach there is open to the publlic and very safe during most weather do to the tide pool. If you walk another half mile past the church you will find a nearly uninhabited black sand beach with good snorkeling - but ask the locals about the swell before you go in there just in case. There are no services here - no restaurant, bank or store - get your supplies in Kona. You will however never see much for other tourist and if you have the Aloha spirit you might make some friends with the locals.
However any one who has the audacity to complain about the poverty in this neighborhood needs to have their head examined or a least a basic history lesson in Hawaiian history. Did you know that most of the land was literally stolen from the natives by the sugar barons in the 1800s when the over threw the monarchy?? did you know that a more recent effort to right this wrong and give land back to the native poplulation meant giving only volcano fields that are in hospitable and non farmable to the natives and not the good land?? so shame on you if you blame these humble native Miolii folk for the state of their neighborhood. Blame instead the shameful history of hawaii.

Miloli'i gets listed as a Hawaiian Fishing village. There's really nothing there after a 5 mile drive down from 1500 ft to sea level. The roads are far from good and the local Hawaiians that live there don't need looky loos staring at their homes. Miloli'i is at least 20 minutes South of Captain Cook and is very isolated. Rented from Southern Belle on Kai Ave and it was not fun. Nice view, nice house. No provision for garbage collection with tenant expected to haul it to the local waste facility, aka dump. Cockroaches and geckos in the car are not my idea of fun. The water is not treated for human consumption and u must buy water to bring there. Location is 1.5 hrs from Kailua airport and almost that to town. Small stores with limited turnover of merchandise and much higher prices are within 30- 45 minutes away.

Not recommended for any one, I locked the doors. The neighborhood is very unkept, wrecked cars, Pitt bulls tied up to trees and starving dogs. Sad, very poor neighborhood.

Drove all the way down only to feel soooo uncomfortable that I didn't get out of my car. I was then followed by four cars, almost felt unwanted.

Beware. Danger Will Robinson. Save yourself. Do you see a theme?? Our friends rented a very nice home in a very very very remote place, Milolii. The colony-outpost-fort is a smattering of homes magically created in fields of rough lava. We never found a point to enter the water in a week.
The 1 1/2 drive to the outskirts of Kona-Kiluea soon became an almost impossible hurdle to convince ourselves to attempt. The permanent residents must have a different take on life because I would be bouncing from the nearest telephone pole if forced to reside there for any length of time.
You might like rugged desolation but at the lowest level of this outpost it is hard to enjoy the lava fields in all directions. Several permanent residents rejoiced in the low cost to buy a lot and build but it would be punishment for many people to be so isolated. The big Island has many places to see so don't seclude yourself behind the countless switchbacks required to make it to the main road. a grueling week.

We just stayed for five nights in a relatively large subdivision in Milolii in what was an absolutely lovely rental home on the edge of a lava seacliff with unobstructed views of the Pacific. We saw whales feeding multiple times a day, enjoyed spectacular sunsets from the lanai, and had a quiet, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable vacation there. So whether you like Milolii rather depends on why you went there in the first place. We wanted peace and quiet away from the main tourist locations and were not disappointed in this regard. If, on the other hand, you want a typical Hawaiian resort experience with white sand beaches to lounge on then sure, Milolii is not that. If you want something a little different, away from the standard Hawaiian resort fare, then rest assured the subdivision there is lovely to stay in -- its quiet, the available rentals are nice and the people are friendly. The state park beach that's a 5 minute drive down the road is a great place to explore tidal pools (and snorkel when the sea is calm at high tide, unfortunately it was quite rough while we were there so snorkeling wasn't an option). The hike to Honomalino Bay from the state park is now well marked, about a mile long through surreal forests and old lava flow landscapes, best done with sneakers so as not to cut your feet on the lava. You will likely have the bay's black sand beach nearly to yourself if you go on a weekday. Sure there are no trespassing signs along the trail to keep you from setting up your beach chair on private property, but what coastline in the US doesn't have numerous no trespassing signs where private property is involved? And yes, you will see some poor homes on your way to the state park and Honomalino Bay, but you will see that in other parts of the island too, including some of the main tourist towns. As for the drive to Milolii from Kailua-Kona and even Captain Cook, yes Milolii is a fair distance away but, on the other hand, that means its closer to Volcano and Hilo if you want to explore that side of the island. In fact, regardless of where you stay on the Big Island, you'll have to do a lot of driving to see all the major sites. In this regard, Milolii is a good halfway point between Kailua-Kona and Volcano/Hilo. There is a town, Oceanview, about 30 minutes south of Milolii where you can get groceries and gas, and 15 of those minutes is spent driving up from the coast to reach the island's belt road, a drive that is pretty spectacular as it involves sharp hairpin turns that you have to take slowly or you'll end up in jagged lava fields. Overall, then, I would recommend staying in Milolii if you are an independent traveler who wants to stay off the beaten track and/or are planning to spend most of your visit relaxing in peace and quiet at your rental. If you stay in the subdivision there, the Pacific is literally at your feet and, if you visit during the right time of year, you will see whales and dolphins breaching and feeding throughout your stay. We never encountered any mosquitoes as others have mentioned but that might be because we were there in February.

Beware of Oceanfront Home with Infinity Pool and Spa 'The Cove at Milolii'"
We booked a VRBO home in Milolii to stay 8/15/18 to 8/22/18 we booked the beginning of May 2018 to stay there for one week. The Volcano became more and more active, we emailed the owners and asked if we could get a refund, the owner Melanie and Craig Fuller told us it's no problem the volcano is a hundred miles away. We responded that was good to know, but my wife has asthma and we would prefer to get a refund. Explaining we have not had a family vacation in 5 years. The next day without any further discussion they cancelled our reservation and refunded $97 of our $1000 deposit. Soon to find out they have a NO CANCELLATION POLICY. VRBO was great, they tried to work with the owners to refund our deposit because we were still 3 months out, they would not. Within the week we offered then to keep our reservation because we could not afford to lose that much money and still go on vacation. They refused and their response verbatim on May 16, 2018 At this point we are respecting your earlier decision not to vacation on the Big Island". Guess what that week we wanted to stay was still available and remained available for along time after they cancelled our reservation and refused to refund our deposit or to let us keep the reservation. I have never been ripped off like this before, this is not good business practice. I guess you can say what goes around comes around.

We stayed in this area in a VRBO rental. Great ocean views and sunsets, quiet. If you're trying to get away from the city, this is a great place to be. It is FAR from Kona--about an hour drive--but gave us good access to the south island beaches and Volcanoes NP. The small fishing village at Miloli'i doesn't have much for visitors but the beach is nice and you can swim or look in the tide pools at fish, etc. Highly recommend staying here if you aren't into the resort life

How high does the tide need to be to have good snorkel access? Looks like on the day we hope to visit, the afternoon high tide is only a bit higher than the morning low. Thanks!

A mid-tide should be fine unless the surf has moved the shore around. The bad news is the outbreak of the Dengue fever from mosquitoes in South Kona so maybe you should head up north to beaches up there. Some areas there offer quite good uncrowded snorkle spots with just a short go-around if you are a strong swimmer, but of course be careful at all times. In doubt-ck with the guards.

Aloha! Next time stay at my house- the es Aloha Beach house and now I call it Fantastic Sunsets at Makai Hideaway. Even though my house is biggish- it 1936 square feet with a 600 foot decl I often get couples and honeymooners. I love the low wear and tear on my house as I like this house better than my house in California. So check it out for your next trip!
