The toll is only 5 dollars for the 26 mile bridge . It’s quite a feet of engineering and all you can see is water both sides of the road . Every now and then there is a hump in the road presumably to allow boats to go under the road. As you reach the top of the hump you can see both carriageways stretching out for as far as you can see. While not the most scenic or interesting bridge I have driven over it is mesmerising

We had been in New Orleans all day and we're worn out. We wanted a relaxing spot. Went to the Bucktown harbour. The lake is like nothing I have ever seen before, the way the water and sky seemed to blend. The sunset was beyond spectacular! We chatted with some families who were fishing. Everyone we have met here in Louisiana has been extremely welcoming and friendly. I would love to spend more time here!.

We did the long drive across the bridge that spans this very large lake. Lots of history here and an important part of the protection from floods not always successful. On the other side are big suburbs, one where a friend lives.

Times change! I remember when the first causeway was built in the 50's. Claimed to be the longest bridge in the world. It was one lane each direction and a toll road. It was hit several times by barge traffic at night. Now it is a super bridge with two lanes each direction, connecting the communities of the "North Shore" to New Orleans.

I rented a bike and rode down Marconi until it dead-ended into the Ponchartrain shoreline and it was lovely there. Grassy area, park benches to sit on and enjoy the view, sailboats on the water, then I rode around to Wisner Blvd and rode along a bike path on the bayou.
Highly recommend at least taking a quick stop to see the shoreline, somewhere. It was pretty and serene.

This lake is huge! I was reminded of Lake Erie (although this is not nearly as large) because you lose sight of any land when crossing the bridge. There is a LOT of traffic here and MANY policemen with their radar units in use BE WARNED!! The drive across is pretty much "normal", but you can say you did it!

Most of you reading this know this bridge is the longest in the United States. Most of you who fly into the MSY (New Orleans) airport will or have seen Lake Pontchartrain from the plane and realize how large it is. Yes, the water is brownish from silt, as is the Mississippi. Yes, the views are pretty much the same, as you can see from my photos. Still, I recommend driving over this bridge at least once. No idea why. Perhaps it has something to do with Katrina, how these waters rose, and how the city survived. Why not...there are some expansive views. If it's foggy, it can be a little challenging and slightly chilling, and some people dig that too.

My son wanted to drive through the longest bridge (continuous) over water in the world 23.87 miles of it! Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. Longest bridge in the US, as well. For $3 toll, it was worth it. Since we were in the area, made slight changes to our itinerary, and we did it.
Toll can be paid in cash. The driver, however, won't be able to enjoy it as much as the passengers -- since he needs to keep on driving. Pretty much you drive through this bridge (can't really stop). We had fun being over this bridge to see this vast lake (that looks like an ocean to us Californians :)
Add it to the bucket list, why not!

I've travelled across the World's Longest Bridge a few times, most recently this past September. Every time I travel it, I think about the tremendous amount of work involved in making this possible.. Keep in mind, bridge was built in the mid fifties and was an engineering marvel at the time. I've seen a documentary on the building of the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway and it is probably availiable on You Tube. If so, I would recommend first time travelers to view it before travelling it. This bridge is a testament to man's ingenuity and resolve to meet the toughest challenges. Keep this in mind as you travel 24 miles across a body of water.
