Neighbourhood: French Quarter
A small and teeming network of laissez-faire living lounged out on the balmy banks of the Mighty Mississippi, the French Quarter has long been a port of call for folks in search of a good time and a great story. Perpetually inebriated Bourbon Street runs across its midriff like a strand of cheap ribbon tied around an otherwise rather pretty and impressively well-kept vintage dress. Throughout the rest of the Quarter, brightly colored Victorian homes and businesses, famously done up with wrought-iron features, provide a distinct and immediately recognizable backdrop for all varieties of fun. At any given moment in this historic riverside setting, some of America’s finest meals are being cooked, most potent cocktails are being mixed, and most engaging music is being performed.

This place is teeming with interesting things - from the t-shirts to the icon statues to the jewelry, you'll find something that interests you here. It was lovely to place an offering at the altar and thank the spirits of the city for their protection during our stay. I spent so much money here but got a lot of items. I can't wait to go back! Sure wish my hometown had a store like this.

The workers here are unfortunately rude. You are "greeted" with someone shouting "No pictures" as you walk in. There was no please attached to the request, nor any other statement of "welcome" accompanied it.

A book interested me. As I reached out to touch it, a worker yelled at me to not touch altar items. I didn't realize it was an offering, and I did not mean disrespect. I had made a mistake, and instead of an emotionally mature lesson on voodoo practices and altar offerings, the worker proceeded to yell at me. It felt like an act of public shaming.

I am a travel writer. I will keep searching for a shop that respects its customers to recommend to my readers. This shop does not. In disrespecting its customers, this shop also disrespects the memory of Marie Laveau.

Recent visit over the weekend and my friend had a tarot card reading. While waiting for her, which took 30 minutes, I had a chance to really look around and explore the space. Something I noticed, which no one else seemed to do, was when looking up there is a large statue in the ceiling which is not lit up or even very visible if one is not paying attention. I have not seen anything written about it and since pictures are not allowed there have been no photos either. So LOOK UP! Love to know if anyone can speak to the significance of it.

This is a neat little store with about everything you could ever want in the voodoo/new age arena. Most items are of the mass produced/made in China flavor but most seem to be unique. The clerk who was working that night was extremely impatient and rude. He made a huffing sound when we asked to have an item that was behind the counter. I had been in NOLA for two days at this point and used the same debit card everywhere. He asked to see my ID for the debit card, which I didn’t have-so he gestured back to me holding my card saying, “well can’t help you”. My sale was about $30.00. Now mind you, this was the first of about 6 places that asked for my ID. Maybe it’s a store policy, but there’s no need to be rude. He really acted like he hated his job, which kind of ruined the overall fun of the shop.

I visited this amazing shop yesterday, Oct 4, 2024 and purchased a beautiful gift for myself. Raven, an amazing assistant who guided me, was very informative on the information shared and the questions I inquired. In this day, not many are knowledgeable of the items they sale nor the spiritual energy that surrounds them, Raven was very knowledge but yet Kind. I appreciate great service. Thank you again, I highly recommend.

Stopped in searching for a statue. When we asked the clerk if they had them, she was very short with just a "no". Our biggest mistake was then asking if she would know where to find them. She responded with an extremely rude "no, I don't shop in the French Quarter". This little gem shouldn't work in the French Quarter either. As a business owner, I would have fired her on the spot for treating a customer this way. We were in no way rude or annoying, and asked a simple question. She should rethink her employment with the public, because she is clearly not cut out for it.

We wanted to stop in to see what an authentic voodoo shop looked like.....we found it. Seriously a cool place and very interesting. While in there it felt like my chest got heavy and I felt a little dizzy, thought maybe it was the incense and things that we burning. The guy behind the desk heard me mention this to my daughter-in-law and said that what I was experiencing was very real. That the energy in the store wanted me to feel that way, it would be cleansing. It creeped me out but I was intrigued. We stayed a little longer, maybe 20 minutes in total, looking at all the cool things they sell. Not 5 minutes after we left they heaviness and dizziness left and I felt really good. Who knows what that was all about but I would definitely enter Marie's House with a lot of respect!

I went in with my daughter today to look. I pulled out my phone to answer a text. I was immediately told not to take pictures by a worker. I told her I was answering my phone. I went to the counter to check out and mentioned the situation to the cashier. He laughed in my face. He told me he was going to call the police. I asked him why and he told me because I was stupid. He told me I feel like I am entitled. I feel I deserve respect as a patron of this store. Don't give this place business. I read this in previous posts when I began my post of my occurrence today. Very illegal business going on.

My daughter was trying to select a necklace for a friend and tried to take a picture of two to get a preference. A man stood over her and yelled -- "NO photos cant you read" Because she is black and I am white, he did not think we were together, so when I said excuse me? can I help you, he backed right down. We had over $100.00 worth of necklaces, amulets and stones and left them all on the counter. There are other stores -- do not shop here.
