Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski's monument dominates this, perhaps the prettiest of all the Squares in Savannah, the Monterey Square.
What makes it even more unique is the fact that the General's final resting place is on the site. Re- interred beneath the 54 foot monument.
What makes it a bit confusing however, the monument is in Monterey Square, not in Pulaski Square ( a Square at another location named after him ).

The young Polish nobleman who fought and died in the Siege of Savannah in 1779 was re- buried here with full military honors in 2005 with Polish dignitaries in attendance.
The re- interment ceremony was held in the beautiful Roman Catholic church the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist...

Monterey Square is another beautiful park like square in the Historic District of Savannah Georgia. This square is tree lined and contains a memorial to Pulaski who was a war hero.

Located just two blocks north of Forsyth Park on Bull St and surrounded by the Mercer Williams House on one side and Congregation Mickve Israel on the other. Monterey Square was laid out in 1847 and was named to commemorate the capture of the city of Monterrey, Mexico in 1846, by General Zachary Taylor’s American forces. As with many of Savannah’s squares, the monument in its center memorializes a famous person not of the same name. In this case it's General Casimir Pulaski. Born in Poland in 1746, Pulaski arrived in the United States in 1777 and volunteered his service to the American cause of Liberty and Freedom from British tyranny. He died in battle in Savannah at age 33. Magnificent statue in a beautiful square. Definitely worth a visit!

The squares, one after another are the true joy of walking around Savannah. Beautiful historic homes surround the square. Massive oak trees, Spanish moss and flowers abound. You will be amazed how peaceful it is.

Another spot that is full of historical information. I try to read all the plaques at every place we see, sometimes if rushed I take a picture and look at it later. I took time to read here, and there is so much to learn if you take a few minutes and take it all in.

Savannah has 22 "Squares" and according to our Segway guide, this one is known for being the "most picturesque". After seeing it, my husband and I understood why.....it is a beautiful place to sit and enjoy the architecture of the surrounding homes and stately trees. It is also well known for where the murder took place in the movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil".

I wasn't familiar with the history of General Casimir Pulaski, whose monument is located here, so wanted to learn a bit more. He left Poland to serve in the American Revolution against the British, having met Benjamin Franklin who introduced him to George Washington. He later became the "Father of the American Calvary". There is also a statue of him in Philadelphia.

There are many squares in Savannah and some are more unique than others. This square offers and interesting monument, the synagogue is close by and other fascinating history to go along with it. Not sure if anyone can visit just one square while in town and I would really put this on your must see squares list. Stop by Forsyth Park while you are in the area. Downtown Savannah is beautiful and offers so much history.

I'm sure we can all pick out our favorite squares in Savannah, and Monterey is definitely one of mine. Beautiful square with a beautiful monument in a very accessible part of the city.

One of the most beautiful squares in Savannah, Monterey (sic) Square was laid out in 1847 as a tribute to the Battle of Monterrey (18460 in which Zachary Taylor led American forces to victory. A key question is why is the monument to General Casimir Pulaski here rather than in Pulaski Square. Originally he was honored jointly with General Nathanael Green in Chippewa Square with a cornerstone. When funding finally became available, a monument was commissioned and the sculptor was allowed to choose where it should be placed; he picked Monterey with the cornerstone from Chippewa moved as well. A full restoration of the monument was completed in 2001. Located at the intersection of Bull and Wayne Streets, it is a delightful place to relax on a bench beneath the trees over a cup of coffee. Temple Mickve Israel and The Mercer House along with other classic buildings are on its perimeter.

The Square has the most prestigious memorial of any of the Squares. It’s a large, white monolith-like tribute to General Pulaski. Just don’t confuse this square with Pulaski Square, the two are entirely different. Additionally, this park is right across the street from the lovely Congregation Mickve Israel Synagogue, one of the oldest in the US and well worth a visit in its own right.
