There were 24 squares in the first design of the town of Savannah. Today there are 22 and within a few years there’ll be 23. Chippewa Square is one of the original squares and here you’ll find a 9 foot statue of James Oglethorpe the founder of this Georgia Colony. Part of the Movie Forest Gump was filmed here on a fiberglass bench where he relates his life story to various people waiting for the bus. In reality they used at least four fiberglass benches one of which was donated to the city and moved into the Savannah History Museum. The square is shaded and very peaceful with plenty of places to sit. The square is centrally located. I recommend a visit!

I visited Chippewa Square on a nice Summer Morning, beautiful place to have your coffee and walk your dog.

I think the significance of the Oglethorpe statue and the Forrest Gump history make this Square a must see when you go to Savannah; too bad the bus bench is no longer there.

I was intrigued by the Oglethorpe Statue, I couldn't figure out was the spike like, plant stuff was at Oglethorpe's feet; turned out to represent a Palmetto tree branch. The meaning of the statue's structure was found with some research.

The Oglethorpe figure faces South, the direction of the Spanish Invasion from Saint Augustine. The Palmetto branch represents the State of South Carolina, which is protected from a southern incursion by the garrison and fleet led by Oglethorpe in Savannah, hence Oglethorpe's drawn sword and battle gear. The statue dates to the early 1900's; statues from that era always had a bunch of hidden meanings in their structure.

Chippewa Square is super great and gets my vote as the most intriguing Square in Savannah, check it out.

I walked around Chippewa Square several times during my visit to Savannah in June 2021. The square has a statue of James Oglethorpe the founder of Georgia and Savannah in the center. Chippewa Square (the North Side) is also the former location of the Forrest Gump bench. I was lucky to have seen it here in August 2003. It has been moved to the Savannah History Museum and I saw it again in its new location. Chippewa Square is one of several squares along Bull Street which runs from the fountain in Forsyth Park to City Hall. Each of these squares has a monument in the center.

Walked through one corner of the park and had two different folks asking me for money.

It's not the city's fault I know but it makes the experience of seeing the Forrest Gump movie location rushed and less romantic and more uncomfortable for a date.

Just passing along.

Chippewa Square is similar to a number of other squares in Savannah. Besides the fact that it is the square where Forrest Gump was waiting on the bus there is not much that is unique about it. It takes less than 3 minutes to walk around the perimeter and since it does not take up much time it is definitely worth seeing. Forsythe park is a walkable distance from Chippewa Square and worth seeing as well.

Visited this square along with many of the other 22 squares laid out in this historic city. Loved the big trees with Spanish moss hanging everywhere, took loads of pics of all the monuments and signs around the squares. Great for history buffs and just general knowledge.

We walked through this square, it's one of many in Savannah. Beautiful lawns and benches but no Forrest Gump bench. There was however a statue of the founder of Georgia, James Oglethorpe. Enjoyed our walk through the park.

Chippewa Square was laid out in 1815 and is surrounded by beautiful historic homes and the oldest building on the square, is the Savannah Theatre (c.1818), as well as the First Baptist Church (c. 1833). Beautiful Spanish Moss filled live oaks, attractive walkways, benches, and historical markers adorn the square. There is much greenery, shade and a peacefulness when walking the square. In the center stands a magnificent statue (c.1910) of an imposing James Oglethorpe, Savannah and Georgia's founding father. The Foley House Inn (c.1896) also sits on the square and not too far is the cool little Six Pence Pub & Restaurant. Yes, this is the square where the famous Forrest Gump scene was filmed.

Hard to miss when walking through historic Savannah. This is where the bench scenes were filmed in Forrest Gump. Turns out the benches were all props and you can see one in the Savannah historical museum. Otherwise, pretty similar to all the other nice squares in the area, each with its only story and bits of history.

Took a walking tour of Savannah on our own with a purchased app. We were looking for the bench that was in the movies Forrest Gump and learned from a kind old man it was in the museum. It drew too much attention and plants were getting trampled but he told us where is sat so we could see the movie angle.
