The interior was closed when we visited; but the station was still an interesting site to visit. The building and grounds have a comfortable nostalgic ambiance; reminiscent of an earlier period in this area's existence.
It was pleasant strolling about a bit; and then sitting & enjoying views of the River.
The only thing we missed, was seeing a train come by while exploring here; though we did have that experience at other times/locations along the water.
Maybe next time....

I live in NO Virginia on an old train line (Washington and Old Domain -- WOD) and love trains and everything train related. We had the opportunity (one of my life check list items) to take the train from Washington to NYC (I've done that many times) but to go north of NYC along the Hudson. I absolutely LOVED the older train station in Rhinebeck. Just a fun trip and a historic / fun experience! We walked 2 blocks to the Rhienbeck hotel - love the little town - love the river & views - just don't expect to find a restaurant or bar :-)

The Hyde Park Train Station is a little known treasure which sits down by the Hudson River in Hyde Park, NY. A small station was built on this site in 1851 and it was this station through which President Lincoln's funeral train passed in 1865. That station was torn out and the present building constructed in 1914 at about the same time that Grand Central Station was being completed in Manhattan and the Hudson River Railroad was connecting New York City to Albany. President Franklin Roosevelt's funeral train returned his body to Hyde Park at this station in 1945. Today the train station is a museum which is open Monday nights 5:00-9:00 pm. In the summer the hours are weekends 12:00 - 5:00 pm. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly and there are model trains running through finely detailed landscapes inside. If you are a train enthusiast - or a history buff - or just love something a little different - this place is a real treat.

The train station has very limited hours, and we couldn't get in to see anything inside it. We didn't call ahead or check the hours before we drove there (in our travels around Hyde Park), so that was our problem, but it would've been fun to see their displays.

The signs on Rt 9 invited us to turn off and visit the "historic train station." What you see is a rather ordinary brick train station with peeling paint and closed except summer holidays and weekend days 12-5. Additional times and events can be found on their website. Looking inside the windows one sees a mannequin behind the period style ticket window, some aged benches and an empty lobby. The windows are littered in part with out of date event fliers and the grounds offer nothing more then grass and gravel. One plus for this site is the Hudson River view from behind the chain-link, barb wire fencing.

We were lucky enough to stop by when it was open and we were able to see the displays inside and a train even came by. If the station isn’t open there is a signboard with the history of the station out front.

The station was closed. It gives a view of the river. Has some placards of information on the river. Four or five minute drive of the main road. Why not check it out

I would have to tell you that this is used for storage and to fuel park service trucks. I was told that it is staffed by volunteers but on several tries not one was to be seen. There are no signs with hours or explanation. It is a beautiful old building and worth the walk around to view the architecture.

I have seen this beautiful old building go through restoration. It is beautiful inside. The main waiting room has high ceilings, chandeliers, and old wooden benches. It reminds you of how important railroad stations used to be.

Train aficionados and people interested in history will enjoy this gem. Others will simply love it for its scenic location and simplicity of days gone by. If you have time, go see it. The tours have a very limited schedule so check ahead! In the summer 2013, it's open weekends and holidays only-- Noon to 5 pm.

Hi, I am visiting NYC in April and am planning a visit to FDR Museum. I am debating taking the train from Manhattan versus renting a car. Is there a train station near to the FDR grounds that are serviced by taxis? Is it easy to do or should I stick with the rental car idea?

We are coming to Hyde Park in Sept 2015 with a bus of retirees. Would the train station be something to visit in the evening? What hours is it open? Is it worth to be included as a "side trip"?
