About
Historically known as Hyde Park, Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is one of the region's oldest Hudson River estates. For nearly two centuries, this place has been home to socially prominent New Yorkers. A superb example of its type, Hyde Park represents the domestic ideal of the elite class in the late nineteenth-century America. It provides a glimpse of estate life, the social stratification of the period, and the world of the American millionaire during the era historians refer to as the Gilded Age.

- Sherida CVentura, California7 contributionsBeautifulWhat a beautiful site to see! It is the epitome of wealth in this country at it's time. Everything in this mansion is opulent! Furniture from around the world, tapestries, decorations, the design and beauty is a sight to see. It gives you an idea of how the other 1% of Americans lived and still live to this day. It is definitely worth seeing.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 April 2024
- Romas2101Richmond, Virginia78 contributionsA visit to the Gilded AgeWe stopped here on a recent NY and PA trip to historic sites. We were inspired to check out this and other mansions after seeing a documentary series on the industrial barons of the Gilded Age. It was very impressive to see the opulence and attention to detail in this magnificent structure. The furnishings and collectibles, mostly from old Europe, were impressive. The huge wall tapestries had just been returned from being cleaned in Belgium. This was supposedly their first cleaning since the house was built and the work had to be done there to prevent shrinkage. The wealthiest families of that era owned more mansions than most of us own in sneakers. Definitely worth a tour.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2024
- WhinbrookGreater London, United Kingdom735 contributionsSmall jewel of a mansionGreat visit conducted by a friendly and informative Park Ranger. Impressive house despite being one of the smaller Hudson Valley mansions. This branch of the Vanderbilt empire that built the house were quieter and less interested in the formality of society and The Gilded Age and used the house more as a personal retreat than showcase of wealth. Lovely setting overlooking the Hudson River.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 June 2024
- RICART75Peru, Indiana2,455 contributionsWonderful resource.....It was a nice realization that our senior Park Pass covered the entrance fee (though it's only $10); being this site is part of the National Park service. The tickets are purchased in the "small" structure the Vanderbilts occupied, while waiting for completion of the main mansion. The craftmanship evidenced in this structure is impressive, in of itself. The staff were friendly, welcoming, informative and accommodating (finding us a couple remaining postcards, from the stored leftover stock, of the former gift shop). These traits were shared by our tour guide. Though not as large and opulent as the Breakers and Marblehouse in Newport (and certainly not on the scale of Biltmore); this Vanderbilt dwelling is still an amazing and magnificent example of architectural detail, and beautiful furnishing/decor. There is room after room of visual feasting. One may debate the issues surrounding the accumulation and ostentatious presentation of wealth; but there is no disputing the result of allowing artesian and skilled workers to have the resources necessary in achieving their best creations. We now all have the ability to appreciate their legacy. One of the real wonders of this estate, to us, is that it is now a National Park; and freely available daily to the public. During our 10 days of exploring the Hudson River Valley, we visited here several times; enjoying the grounds and splendid River views. It was an excellent way to relax for a bit, after driving around much of the day; and just immersing into the natural beauty of this section of the country. And, we were certainly not alone in appreciating this wonderful resource. Every time we stopped in, there were numerous others scattered about; taking advantage of this land, which has been turned back to all of us to enjoy.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 June 2024
- JMagicfanOrlando, Florida280 contributionsAmazing stop. This place was amazing. The tour guide was very good and answered all questions thrown at him. The gilded age was like no other time in America. This was a summer home only and parties and hosting were daily. Only to be outdone in NYC for other times. Husband and wife had separate bedrooms but with a hidden door. hmmm... The rich had bathrooms in the late 1800's and the roof skylight lifted for cool air to rise from the basement. Amazing stop.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 July 2024
- TakemetoalaskaCape Coral, Florida2,066 contributionsWOW!This home alone is worth the trip, but you get the bonus of the grounds. The grounds alone are worth the trip. When we come back again, we would bring a packed lunch and cooler because they have paths and beautiful scenic places to stop. The house is just stunning and jaw dropping. It is well worth the visit and we will absolute be back.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 July 2024
- Christina BLouisiana6,962 contributionsAwesome Stop to SeeWhile passing through Hyde Park we stopped in to visit. Tickets were easy to option at the visitors center there. We learned so much about the generational Vanderbilts & their wealth. Massive and showing off their wealth is obvious. House has no AC, but it wasn’t bad. There are stairs, but an elevator is available if needed. Worth stopping in to see. They do take American the Beautiful pass as well.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 July 2024
- dee-you0887 contributionsGreat tour!We only live about an hour from the mansion and visit every 4 or 5 years. Glad we visited today. Our guide, Dimitri, was fabulous! He's incredibly knowledgable, witty and engaging. Probably one of the best experiences of all the national parks and museums we've been to thanks to him. After the mansion tour my husband and I walked over to the Italianate Gardens which is a must see. We'll be back.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 September 2024
- MarshaOrlando, Florida170 contributionsMore than Quaint!Don't compare this property to the FDR's, because you really can't. On it's own it too, is a great property, but there is not as much to see and do here. The house itself is absolutely opulent and the tour guide gives you a wonderful overview and history of Franklin Vanderbilt. The grounds are lovely and right on the Hudson River. If you pack a lunch, you can drive down to the river and have a picnic. The tour lasts an hour, so it won't take up your whole day.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024
- SeniorTravelerTF1,249 contributionsThe guides make it more than conspicuous grandiosity.By far the best guide we have ever had in many years of park service visits, and he was one of several that have spent years learning and teaching at the site. If not for the information the guide presented, historical background and context, it would have been Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous in the Gilded Age. Beautiful grounds (garden) and furnishings, but not worth it alone - the tour is the way to go.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2024

This was quite the experience. A wonderful afternoon spent touring the vacation house of the Vanderbilt's. The property is stunning, much of the furniture within are all originals hence why they keep the windows and curtains shut (to prevent light damage). The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept us entertained with little anecdotes throughout. A well preserved historical building and we enjoyed visiting.

We all know that the Vanderbilts had money. At this site, you can see how they spent it! Set in spectacular, spacious grounds, the mansion interior is a must-see. The expression of extravagant, decadent wealth is staggering - and to think they spent just a few weeks a year here. Alas, the only way to see the inside of the mansion is via a guided tour by a NPS ranger. So check to be sure tours are being offered when you visit.

There is just so much to do in the Hudson valley , and this is one of the places you must visit. Tour is schedule every hour to go inside the mansion. I haven’t been to that many mansion, but this one is the most extravagant one so far. From exterior decoration to the inner ornament, these people knew the luxury way of life. The ground is open to public until 8pm but the main office closes at 5pm. There are other Vanderbilt mansions I plan to visit in the future.

We had a lovely visit. Entrance fee was $10 each. Parking was free. Tour was an hour. A very knowledgeable and friendly park ranger was our guide which was the first and second floors plus the basement (where the kitchen and some of the staff quarters were). There are several flights of steps to negotiate so keep that in mind. The home is well kept and the furnishings had all of the glamour of the time. Our tour guide was personable and fun, which made the tour even better. Would recommend!

The gardens and home are well worth taking the tour. This mansion was owned by Frederick Vanderbilt. We had just been to the Biltmore which was owned by George Vanderbilt. This house is much smaller but still shows how rich people lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

If you have come to Hyde Park for the Roosevelt historic sites, you definitely should include the Vanderbilt Mansion in your itinerary. Stepping inside the mansion today doesn't feel much different than visiting for an opulent evening in the late 1800's since the interior is completely preserved as the last Vanderbilt occupants left it. The interiors are a fascinating blend of European influences. We toured on a Friday afternoon and had ample opportunity to absorb all the details due to the fact that our tour group was small. Don't miss an excellent view of the Hudson and the Catskills from behind the mansion. The staff at the visitor center were very pleasant and it is possible to purchase the America the Beautiful NP Annual Pass which we put to good use right away.

We went early in the day, as advised, because of no air conditioning in the mansion. We enjoyed hearing the history of the family and the building of the mansion. We got to see the 1st and 2nd floors and the basement. It was very interesting to hear how the NPS acquired the house. The only thing we were disappointed in was not being able to see views of the Hudson River as they might have in the early 1900's. They have let the trees and vegetation grow so that is impossible.

This was a beautiful house and worth seeing. The grounds were nice, very large, like a big park. I was very disappointed in the tour however. The tour should have taken maybe 45 minutes but our tour guide talked so slow and talked about himself, and made jokes that weren't funny. It took an hour and a half. He wasted ALOT of time. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

The Vanderbilt Mansion stands as a shining example of excess. Over-the-top furnishings with hints of delusions of grandeur. Massive chairs designed to look like thrones, and artistic and architectural references to the Medici family. It makes a particularly interesting contrast to FDR's home, which is just down the river and reachable by a trail that runs along the Hudson.
This is the only Vanderbilt property that is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service (and how that came to pass is a great story - make sure to ask the guide), and we understand that the price to visit other Vanderbilt mansions can run as high as $45.00 pr person, so that site is a real bargain if you want to see how the rich spent their money during the Gilded Age.

Fantastic! Really impressive building. Our tour guide, Dmitri, was knowledgeable and funny. The home is immaculately maintained by the National Park Service and has all its original furnishings, which is rare. A great example of Gilded Age opulence in a stunning Hudson riverbank setting.

Also are you open for tours on 11/2/19
Written 7 September 2019
Agreed; best source for particular dates would be to contact the NPS for the site directly.

What time is the first tour of the mansion?

It depends what month you plan to go. Here is the link to the hours/scheduled tours: Until Oct. 26, the first tour is at 9:15. After that date, tours are only offered at noon and 4 (different times available for groups of 10+), resuming their expanded schedule in May. Be sure to check their website. :-)

Could we use our NP Senior Passes for any of the sites in this area?
Written 28 February 2017
The address listed is WRONG. That is for The Roosevelt mansion. Made my girlfriend and I stressed and late. Plus had to drive through Poughkeepsie which is not pleasant. You need to check basic facts. I didn't have reason to doubt the address as it was provided on a site about The Vanderbilt Mansion.

Did you miss those big blue signs that point direct you to "Vanderbilt estate" ? Big arrows? Sorry you were so stressed but you might try say, Google Maps?

Is it possible to do the FDR Museum, the ValKill, and the Vanderbilt Mansion tour in one day?
Written 8 September 2016
Yes. We did it in one day. There is a ticket you can buy for all three, with tours, but you need to reserve the space in the tour. Valkill is the tour with the least people, so I would go for it first. If you are "winging it", and just show up, you might get into partially full tours, without reservations. This is good especially if you have a National Parks pass which give you drastic reductions in cost. If you make reservations in advance, and you get ahead of the reservations, just show up early to the next one, and they will get you into an earlier tour.
