I live in the Gettysburg area and really enjoy The Eternal Light Peace Memorial off of Mummasburg Road. We used to go there in the evening when I was growing up and was a favorite stopping place. It was commemorated in 1938 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The flame is always on, although there was a period of time when it was not.

This beautiful Memorial was dedicated by FDR in 1938. Atop sits a one ton bronze urn holding the flame. A truly remarkable sight.

The Eternal Light Peace Monument was dedicated by FDR in 1938, at the 75th Reunion of the Blue & Gray. The flame burns eternally as a hope for worldwide peace. It only went out once, briefly during World War II, because of blackout restrictions. The...More

Gettysburg has such an important place in our nation's at times fragile history. We all should remember the values of the eternal light - especially in the current political climate. Americans - united in peace and good will.

We could all do better to carry the light and preserve the peace instead of continuing concluded battles. Thanks for the reminders.

I had a great life lesson at The Eternal Light Peace Memorial. Don't walk while you are taking pictures! Fell over a parking bumper. The view is beautiful all around and this memorial is larger than it looks from a distance. My picture was of...More

Always a must stop for us on any Gettysburg trip! It's usually quite peaceful, even with the tour buses and all the others. The whole battlefield is amazing!

Definitely purchase the $21.99 audio tour at the visitors center. This is one of the stops. It was windy, cold, and serene. It was also telling and applicable to today - why can’t we honor these memorials and follow through on their promise?

This is a beautiful setting, looking out from Oak Ridge Hill, which the CSA held at the end of the first day. It was dedicated at the 50th anniversary of the battle. However, at this battlefield, and the others, all I could think of was the...More

Another stop on the battlefield tour is the Eternal Light. It too is a must see as you listen to the detail of its creation, and the events that took place around the area where it is located.
