I found this when Googling Nike Herc so I did not visit in person. Its too bad most of the buildings "down range" are no longer there. I see from the photos the three missile barns and the maintenance building are still there. The ready...More

While traveling through the Everglades, my friend spotted this site while at the visitor's center. It's a 10-15 minute drive away from the Anhinga Trail and was completely unexpected. There were nuclear missiles staged in the Everglades in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. You...More

Great little extra stop when going to Everglades National Park. Volunteers will guide you though the history of the base and they have a fully restored Nike Survace to Air Missle in one of the hangers. Great bit of Cuban Missle Crisis history.

Very interesting and the staff has a great knowledge of the sites history. The refurbished missile and other hard ware give you an idea of how far we have come sense the Cuban Missile Crisis

Nike Missile Base Tour HM69 was chilling reminder of how close we came to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union in the 1960’s. The base brought back childhood memories of hiding under school desks and covering our heads during “duck and cover drills”. I...More

Included in your Everglades entrance, an informative tour of the HM69 Nike Missile base in the Everglades. Nice overview of the Cuban missile crisis and my kids were able to tie it in to what they were learning in school. Nice.
