We decided to get out of the house on a warm sunny February 1 and head to the waterfront. We opted to visit the SF Maritime National Historical Park located at the west end of Fisherman’s Wharf at the Hyde Street Pier. You can only go about a third of the way on the pier without paying the admission to the park. Your annual national park pass works here too and will let you in without having to pay the $15/person entrance fee.
There are 2 ships, a ferry boat, a tug boat and several other smaller water craft and boats. You can go on most and see what these ships were about. All have been retired but have interesting histories which is explained once you are on the boats. Total time for the visit was about and hour and a half. There is a fair amount of walking with flights of stairs and through a few hatch doors. It was fun and we recommend it.

I went to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Ships at Hyde Street Pier. There are four boats for a fee to see. I liked the ferry boat Eureka the best. There are a variety of workshops, houses, and buildings to see also in this area.

Had a little time and visited the Hyde Street Pier, where ferries took cars across the bay before the Golden Gate Bridge was built. Views of said bridge and several old time ships, along with a great view of Alcatraz. It's a one- place- view- a- lot- stop. What a great Historical Park. Even if you don't go in to visit the ships, the outside had information, views, pulley and knot tying stations, etc. Totally worth a stop and look!

Great fun, informative and interesting. You can stroll along the pier and see the historic ships and read their placards or for $5 more- you get an entry to all ships and programs by the park service. We really enjoyed this.

The weather was fantastic as we walked along the wharf! We did not take the tour but really enjoyed looking at the exhibits and admiring the ships from the pier.

The Maritime Museum, anchored with the Hyde Street Pier, makes for a wonderful visit to the city. A floating piece of history that you can soak in. A visit to San Francisco is incomplete without visiting the ships at the pier!

An under-promoted gem of the Hyde St Pier, the 100-plus year-old scow schooner Alma sails regularly around the Bay. Don’t miss it! You’ll be sailing on a vintage restored vessel that I feel offers the smoothest bay sailing tour around (its a long, wide, flat bottomed vessel, so it doesn’t heel or rock at all while plowing through the choppy waves). As a novice sailor, I was fascinated with all the ginormous masts, sails, and rigging, as it is all authentically maintained. You can help hoist the sails (takes several people), watch the volunteer crew work nimbly to steer and trim, tour the backside of Angel Island (i sails through Raccoon Strait), and enjoy the ocean view of the SF shoreline. Great fun for all ages, and the only vessel of its type still actively in use in the US. The ranger on board offers interesting stories of the old shipping days, and how Alma once carried hay, coals, timber, etc. around the bay and far up the Sacramento Delta. Check the website for sailing dates. $40 for a wonderful afternoon on a unique boat!

I have a small dog are there dog friendly places around the area?
Written 12 April 2015
Great that you're travelling with your dog. We had to leave our dog at home (I'm living in Europe), so we were without dog. But the area in front of the Pier is kind of a small park, so should be perfect for a dog, lots of grass and some trees/bushes. Thinking of a day with a dog this area should be perfect for a walk even with dog. I'm not sure if you can take the dog into the National Historic Park (can't believe this), but starting your day in this area outside the Pier is fine.
