- MILOUWNew York City, New York1,387 contributionsMuseum focused on American ArtThis Modern Museum has a rather drab appearance in a pleasing section of Golden Gate Park. The longitudinal galleries display interesting collections of American and primitive art works. Well worth a visitVisited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 November 2023
- Trina DOrange County, California1,223 contributionsArt & culture at Golden Gate ParkAs far as fine art museums go, de Young is pretty nice. It's quite large and the cafe serves up some delicious food. My husband and I were here on a rainy Friday. We were going back and forth between de Young and the Academy of Sciences across the way. I had it in my mind to also visit the Legion of Honor too with our admission ticket/sticker but alas, the Legion is a further ways away and we came via bus. What I did notice that there was less seating than I was used to in the galleries, perhaps they don't want people just sitting there to look at the art for long periods of time? They did have seating in the hallways overlooking the garden below. I guess I was okay with that. I enjoyed the turn of the century paintings and portraiture on display along with a marble statue or two. If you're looking to level up on some art and culture, go check out the de Young while visiting San Francisco.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 January 2024
- flotravels99San Diego, California21 contributionsArt for all ages, families or soloThe de Young does not disappoint. I’ve been a handful of times and I always discover something new. The exhibits rotate frequently enough that I’m newly engaged each time. The special collections are not to be missed as they are nicely curated and beautifully displayed. Take a moment to sit quietly and enjoy the view of the sculpture garden. The staff are very friendly and offer special hands-on programs for all ages. This museum is well worth the price of admission and your time.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 March 2024
- D iTiburon, California408 contributionsA Visitor & Local Favorite! We never miss the Annual Bouquets To Art exhibit! Floral artists make an arrangement to compliment many pieces of art. It's amazing! Even my husband & son loved it. They have a great cafe with indoor & outdoor dining, weather permitting. The floral dresses were done by San Francisco City College floristry students, where this college is well known by those looking to be florists. The art & special exhibitions throughout the year are also excellent. f you're visiting, a MUST see! Or even if within northern CA. and have never been to this annual exhibition.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 18 June 2024
- goldenparadoxPasadena, Maryland587 contributionsObservation Deck & Sculpture Garden is FREEI was in the area visiting the Botanical Gardens, Japanese Tea Garden and the Academy of the Sciences across the street and came to de Young's to get a bite to eat and use the restroom. I ate outside by the sculpture garden which you can enjoy without an admission ticket. Also, taking the elevator up to the observation deck is FREE, which I highly recommend, especially if it's a clear day. The views are spectacular and the fact that it's free is a bonus! You can also use the restrooms as well (without an admission ticket). If you're in the area, it's definitely worth swinging by to go up the observation deck.Visited August 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 September 2024

Just saw the Frida Kahlo exhibit on the 14th October. Not interested in commenting on the exhibit itself. You either like her or you don't. It felt dangerous to be there. While they control the number of people who can enter at any given hour, there is no control once inside the exhibit itself. Far too many people in too small a space with groups of people clustering around most of the pictures/photos etc. Everybody was wearing a mask but there wasn't even the slightest attempt to enforce any kind of social distancing. Very disappointing. I feel compelled to go into quarantine and get tested for covid-19 before going out into the world again.

This museum is well organizxed and tryhing to position itself as a private museum with its own curating philoshphy. However, the exhibitions are not rich enough to attract general travlers comparing thouse of other big museums in big cities. If you are a visitor and do not have much time to spend at two museums, I recommend to visit the SFMOMA.

We visited the deYoung to view the current exhibits and stayed for lunch at the cafe. This was just prior to the restrictions currently in place. Food is good but the beverages are way too expensive!!! There are excellent salads, the carnitas tacos 😀, clam chowder and the roasted chicken was top quality. Very prompt service and helpful. Well worth your time.

When we first entered, we went to the viewing deck on the 9th floor of the tower. It was a gorgeous clear day and the panaromic view of the city was absolutely gorgeous! It was worth the visit just for that, yet we spent a few hours viewing the amazing art collection. The exhibits included art from the Americas, Africa, as well as the usual American/European art. One could easily spend several hours at this fabulous museum.

The deYoung's strength is not in its permanent collection, but in the architecture and the special exhibit space/special exhibits themselves. They do an excellent job of staging exhibits that are easy to navigate, accommodate large crowds, and highlight not only the artwork but the artists and the thought that went into the works.
This Fall's special exhibit is Judy Chicago: A Retrospective. I was simply blown away. It is the best special exhibit I've seen in years. Not having been familiar with her work, it was both an educational experience and a visual delight. As always, the deYoung displays the work flawlessly and does an excellent job of telling the history and story behind the works. Very rarely do I see an exhibit more than once, but I will make another trip to San Francisco to see this. It was THAT good.

John D. Rockefeller donated a number of paintings that make the deYoung's collection of American colonial and 19th C paintings the best west of the Mississippi. Fabulous collection of large African and Oceanic pieces. And an extraordinary view over the Richmond District to the bay from the observation tower, which may be the best feature of this exceptional regional museum.

Extremely rude staff. Super expensive tickets but they don’t have a basic space (inside or outside) to park strollers/wagons. We always travel with a wagon because my toddler gets tired quickly and wants to be carried. We have never had any problem folding up the wagon and parking it somewhere before entering the buildings/museums that don’t allow wagons in. The front person at the de young museum came out to stop us from entering because wagons aren’t allowed inside. When we suggested to park the wagon, he said no because they don’t have storage space as he was waving the couple behind us to go in. This was in the middle of the week with only two families behind us in the line. I can’t believe how rude and unwelcoming the staff was. We are not going back to any museum associated with this foundation.

My boyfriend and I like art museums, but we'd say we prefer "traditional" art over modern. This museum is more modern - it has cool rotating and non-rotating exhibits and I like that it showcases local talent, but it likes to feature "thinking" art. Less "Van Gogh painting" and more "essence of the Black Lives Matter movement sculpture. However, I will say that I very much like how the building is organized - very easy to get around in!

Love the free parking in the area on Sundays: come early to snag an all-day space. It's beautiful approaching the space, and once inside, it's airy and welcoming. Plenty of spaces to sit and pause, plenty to browse in the shops when you're done. We've been for many exhibits, but the Egyptian one was just stunning. It's always a challenge when there are lots of people, but the best perk is that you can apply your ticket price to a membership. For educators, that means you might have a year's membership for super cheap! It's well worth the visit no matter what time of year.

I had the pleasure to view Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963–1983 at de Young. Great great exhibit and is a must see. The museum itself was beautiful and the layout was easy to walk around.

Is it still true that De Young and Legion of Honor are a 2 for 1 for one day?
Written 3 January 2023
Loved our visit summer of 2016. Haunted by the memory of a work that in my memory was many pieces of charred wood from churches etc. that had been burned in acts of racism hanging individually. It was intensely moving. Asking for help identifying the title, artist and where it might be displayed today. Thank you.

How long should we plan to spend at the Monet and Gauguin exhibitions?
Written 27 April 2019
Sorry for the delay as we were traveling, but I'd say 2-3 hours which is what I believe a group or private tour is. All depends on your love of the art and time you like to take to savor the pieces. Enjoy!

Is the Muslim clothing exhibit still there
Written 12 January 2019
There are other special exhibits all year. Their website can let you know the dates. They also run shows at the Legion of Honor, it is another museum about 15 minutes away from the deYoung.

Written 12 January 2019
Yes the Muslim clothing was still there but not sure about now. The Museum is amazing! If you are in the area and have time visit the Legion of Honor museum it is a drive away. I enjoyed that more than the De Young

I would like to ask if this place is worth a visit ? and how much would a single ticket cost ?
Written 7 April 2018
One of my favourite places in SF. I've never managed both museums in one day, because we always have lunch at the DY. Go there by bus for a discounted ticket.

Definitely worth a visit along with the Legion of Honor museum. You should check the website for current ticket prices (both museums in one day on one ticket, I think). (I am a painter and kind of picky about these things.)

Is the annual floral exhibit worth the $50 fee?
Written 1 March 2018
The Bouquets de Art is one of the most spectacular exhibits at the museum. Every year the staff chooses new paintings and sculptures to have florists take flowers and make them into art. I go every year and try to go at the beginning of the show when flowers are freshest. Not to be missed!
