Yet another reason why you should not drive this yourself. Our highly experienced tour driver was able to squeeze our tour van into a parking spot and he knows exactly where to look. Meanwhile. the Hana Highway was a complete mess with cars attempting to go in both directions and tourists trying to get a good photo while the photographer tries to not get hit by a car.
Yes, the falls are beautiful and makes for great photos, but if I was driving, I am not sure I'd feel comfortable trying to park my car and then getting out of the spot with the amount of cars trying to cram into such a small space.

We drove out to Wailua Falls, which is right along the Pi’ilani Highway. Unfortunately, we were there during the dry season and the falls were not as impressive as they likely are during the wet season. It was a long way to drive (we came from Kula) for something that was not that impressive.

This magnificent 80-foot waterfall is your last stop on the road to Hana before you enter the National Park. We got there around 4p and it was pretty empty (around 6 other people). We took a swim in the pond below the waterfalls and it was very refreshing. The pond is too shallow to jump from the waterfall (only about 4-5 feet). A guy jumped and then told us not do any jumping as it was too shallow so be forewarned. Such beautiful falls, you can see the falls from the road but take the short hike to go right underneath to get the full experience.

The waterfall of all waterfalls. Absolutely stunning, and a popular photo op for Maui marketing brochures! This is in the Kipahulu area, so it takes a bit to get to it, but you will not be disappointed. It usually runs all the time, but if there has been an extreme drought, it may slow to a trickle. In heavy rains, it's amazing, but don't swim in those conditions. There is a small short trail that leads to it for a plunge, but only when it is manageable. You'll know. There is also a small parking area for about a dozen cars, and some are taken up by vendors selling snacks and Hawaiian-made jewelry. Easy access for swimming, so plan on it...but get here early! It does get busy, Anyone that considers Hana as a destination should definitely consider staying one or two nights in any number of small bungalows offered. Just ask around. I have a second home in Hana, and always enjoy getting to these falls early in the morning before the tourist show up. Besides, it is east-facing, so the mornings are best for swimming and photography due to the sun position. If you go in, just be sure it's not raining. Flash floods do happen, but at least it's fairly easy to escape if it ramps up quickly.

We went past this falls on the way to the Seven Sacred Pools. This was by far the best waterfall we saw along the Road to Hana.

Just know that parking is $25, but WORTH it. Once you park and hit the visitor center the falls hike is to the left of the trail, it's about a 4 mile and back and forth. A nice hike through the rain forest on a trail with a good incline. It gets muddy and there's rocks and roots you need to climb over so make sure to have on good shoes you don't mind getting dirty. BUG SPRAY IS A MUST!!!!! You are in the rain forest and there's tons of mosquitoes. Make sure you obey the signs, "do not pass" means stop, it's for your safety. When you hit the bamboo forest you are little more than half way. The waterfall at the is awesome, it's huge, you'll feel the mist and it's a great treat at the end of the hike. (ALSO, BRING DRINKING WATER!!) There is a bathroom next to the visitor center.

This is one of several falls along the Road to Hana that can be reached from the road. There is a small parking area for 8-10 cars or so, walk across the road and there it is. We were there shortly after some rains and it was really gushing - Beautiful.

This waterfall is one for the postcards, yet it’s also one of the most accessible ones. And this is before you realize how an aerial view elevates the scenery to the land of fantasy.

How long does it take to hike to the falls after you park?
Written 15 October 2018
You may be thinking of another waterfall. Wailua is right on the road in Kipahulu. There is no hike other than a trail about 15 yards or so from the bridge...however you can see and photograph the falls without taking the trial. The other waterfall that you may be referring to is Waimoku Falls. That is actually in Haleakala Nat'l Park and is the stream that feeds Oheo Gulch, aka Seven Sacred Pools. That is a highly recommended and publicized hike that is relatively easy. The only strenuous part is maybe the first quarter mile that increases in elevation a bit. The rest is fairly flat, but includes about an overall 650 foot rise in elevation. It's about a 4-5 mile round trip hike and takes about 2.5 to 5 hours depending on how long you take. Take drinking water with you. Be careful. Although it is tempting to take a swim in the relatively shallow pool...3-feet deep maybe..folks have been killed...and nearly killed by falling rocks, such as myself. I moved off of a rock in the pool about 3 minutes before a huge rock fell 400 feet right where I had been sitting. I was out drying off. When it hit, the rock exploded in fragments that rained down on the entire area. It was about 2-feet in diameter. Would have taken me out. There is absolutely no cell service there...and the nearest help is by foot back out the 2+ mile trail to the ranger station. I urge folks to go. It is beautiful and a beautiful hike through the bamboo forest, but be wary that harder things can fall than water...
