Not somewhere I'd spend a full day or 1/2 day, but as you cruise around Hana it's a quick visit.

Best part of it is it's fairly secluded, we saw only a handful of other people.
Also very nice views back into Hana, beautiful snapshot of the town from the bay.

The pier is closed (gated, locked) so no walking out on it. There's a beach that's somewhat black sand, but we didn't try to swim there.

If you make the long and tiring drive to Hana and you miss seeing Hana Bay, you have missed one of the most beautiful beaches and views on the route. We rolled into Hana at about 10:00 AM and sort of by accident went right to Hana Bay. It was just another of those wonderful places to visit on the drive and like everything else, made the drive well worth the effort. If you take that drive, check out Hana Bay. You will we quite happy you took the time.

The other reviews are right, there is nothing special about Hana Bay, but go! Go to the far side, and park by the pier. Walk over to it and follow the path that goes off beside it. The path hits a spot where it is kinda washed away and a tree has fallen down. You have to pull up to get on the tree back to the trail, grandma ain't gonna be able to do it! From there just look the direction the trail would continue. You'll see it probably another 20 feet; a red sand beach! Ok, so it's more burgundy but that's a version of red! I pulled the kids up, helped the wife, and then we went over to it. It's probably 30 ft wide, the water is rough, but where else are you going to see this! We hung out for 20 minutes or so just looking and walking on it. It makes me feel sad for these others reviewers that didn't venture beyond the pier! We found it because we read a guidebook so it's not a secret!

If you go along the western side of Hana Bay you'll get to the red sand beach where you have an easy entry into a spectacular snorkelling venue. What's more, your bragging rights are superb. Take a tent to Hana so you can stay overnight after such a long drive. You'll be able to see all 7 falls and go snorkelling. Too many people try to do this trip in one day and they don't get the full benefit of their efforts.

What a great place. Set up under a shade tree right on the beach. The protected bay is perfect for those not wanting to swim in the strong surf of other nearby beaches. Great for small kids and elderly alike. No huge waves to pummel you down. Water sometimes looks a little brown, but not really when you get in. Some days really clear. I always like it the best down on the far end near the boat ramp. Lots of shade, quieter, and the water is a little better over there. Other amenities for this beach includes food concession, restrooms and outdoor on-beach rinse-off shower. The pier is condemned and scheduled for removal, but also serves as a fun jumping off platform for older kids or the kids in all of us! If you venture onto it, no one will chase you off, but just watch your step.

This is a very little known beach right outside of Hana Bay. It can be a steep climb to get to but the view is spectacular! Don't bother to ask directions for how to get here at the Hana Bay Beach itself. They won't tell you. We had to go to the police station to get directions as well as a firm warning that the pathway to this particular beach can be dangerous. (Don't bother going if it is raining or going to rain)
Once you get there please keep in mind that clothing is optional. When we got there, there was only 6 people on this beautiful beach and half of them were wearing clothes. The water is pristine blue that you can see the bottom. I wouldn't take small children as the climb may be to dangerous for them.

My wife and I stopped here while we were driving on the road to Hana. We were not impressed. It seemed like an average harbor that had a lot of industrial work being done in it. Since it is off the beaten path, I would not recommend going out of your way to go here. There were several other cars that went down to the harbor and even turned around without having anyone get out.

It was a long drive to Hana. But we managed to get there and saw this lovely bay. Many families were swimming and some were there having picnics. A lovely spot to go to.

If you come from anywhere that has white sand black sand looks dirty and uninviting, not a beach i would swim in

Hana Bay is worth the wait. The self drive roadtrip may have you on the edge of your seat. Though there is waterfalls to dip into. Black sand beach nearby worth a look. Keep driving beyond to Wailea and there is something to satisfy the avid traveller. Why not stop by for an Häagen-Dazs icecream at the Kaupo General Store. Jan 2015
