    Love this hike
This is the second time making the hike. First time was solo. This time I was joined by my wife. I'm 49 years old and in pretty good shape for my age. The hike was much easier for me than 4 years ago due to being able to work out this year. Last time I was coming off a knee injury. It still is not an easy hike. The downhill is more difficult than the return climb. It is shaded for about the first half of the hike. The rest has no shade. It took us about an hour each way but we stopped for pictures/video a few times. The snorkeling at the end is great. I saw a pretty large eel but no dolphins. Beware that there are a lot of loose rocks. It would be very easy to injure a knee or ankle on the rocks. A majority of the hike is over loose terrain. It is a steady decline/incline with pretty much no flat stretches. I worked at the IRONMAN triathlon from 7am to 1 pm the day of our hike so we didn't start until after 2. The heat was fine for us but may not be for others. Take plenty of water and a pair of dry shorts for after you swim. I saw people into their 60's that were making the hike with frequent breaks. We also saw people not make it. It's worth it though

You gotta snorkel on the Big Island!
The snorkeling here is great. We took a tour in a boat from up the coast rather than make the long hike down. Lots of coral, lots of underwater formations, lots of sea life, clear and peaceful water. We saw lots of fish, including puffers, morays, parrot fish, clown fish, trumpet fish, trigger fish, and lots of sea urchins. Highly recommend.

Loved it and the hike was tough but fun
Parked at trail head and hiked down. Approximately 2 miles one way. Fairly steep all the way down. Do not hike unless you are fit. Fairly rigorous. Take plenty of water, minimum three to four bottles per. Absolutely the best snorkeling on the big island. Worth the hike. No facilities at top or bottom

    Hike to Kealakekua Bay
My watch clocked 101 floors on a way up. This requires some cardio fitness and strong quads. We are an active couple 62 and 72 years old. I would say it is a moderately difficult trail. My advice is to pick a cloudy day and start early to avoid hiking when the UV index is the highest. Wear good shoes and watch your step especially during the first part of the hike when it is very hard to see where you are stepping as the trail is overgrown with grass. There are loose rocks and stepping on one can make you loose your balance. The views from the trail are beautiful. We came just for the hike but saw number of tour boats there and people snorkeling. It was bizarre to see some people put chairs and towels right in front of the Captain Cook monument. He must be turning over in his grave.. Take plenty of water and some food if you are planning to stay in the bay for a while. BTW - there are no restrooms there.

A highlight of the trip - eco friendly style!
Our family loved our few hours snorkeling here!! We got to this area via people power - we kayak’ed through a local company along with a guide. I don’t think I’d ever seen such a variety of sea life in one small spot. Just incredible. As a side benefit, our guide gave us some historical background on the cliffs and structures in the area. What an afternoon!!

We were not into snorkeling this day as we were taking in all the drives around the island but we did want to see this spot because we heard so much about it. If you follow your GPS to take you there, you end up at the end of a rough area with no spot to snorkel. It's not really a parking lot either but we took in the view and read what information was displayed and realized that the snorkeling spot is around the corner. The parking to get there is rough and if you do find a spot, you have to walk to get down to it. We were there in the afternoon, so the water was very rough. You need to go in the morning and you really have to paddle out to the area or take an actual boat tour out to really snorkel.

This place was a magical experience. So many kinds of fish, sea life, and even goats along the shoreline! The water is the bluest I have ever seen. I recommend the Fairwinds boat tour to enjoy snorkeling in the area.

Good snorkeling. A very long walk to get there. I found going down with the loose lava worse then going up. Do not hike this trail unless you plan on snorkeling. Shocked by the number of people hiking with kids without snorkeling, and then trying to ask the tours to sell them snorkel gear. Be prepared. The mongoose will open your pack, very talented and eat your sandwich. I’m glad we did it, but the snorkeling at 2 step was amazing and a lot less effort to get there. I wouldn’t personally go back

We hiked down, which took us about 45 minutes. Once there, you'll encounter a beautiful bay with crystal clear water. I forgot my snorkel gear, but my sister-in-law didn't, so she went out and said it was great. It's a destination spot for kayakers and tour boats, so there will be other people around. To enter the water and out is a little tricky as well, so be prepared. Here's the fun part. The hike back up. It's TOUGH! Sign said 2000ft elevation gain, and it's nearly straight up with no switchbacks. You better have good shoes since you'll be on mostly lava rocks, you'll be exposed to the sun most of the time, bring a lot of water, and be in decent shape. I wouldn't hike it again, but will look into a kayak or boat tour.

Rented an Airbnb on this street for 4 days. A lovely peaceful spot for sure. We unfortunately had rough seas and weren’t able to swim or kayak while we were there. Didn’t see the dolphins that people spoke of either. But loved watching the waves, listening to the rocks rolling, and relaxing there.

Easy hike down yet a tough hike up. Fun area to visit. Easy trail to follow. Snorkeling was available except it was high tide so I passed. Tide pools had some fish. Monument was nice. Bring water shoes as the black lava rock gets hot.

Found on the shoreline below Kealakekua, this Bay is one of the best spots for aquatic activities on the Big Island :)). The well protected and clear waters, abundant marine life (including spinner dolphins), and proximity to the Captain Cook monument (on a small plot of land actually owned by the UK, where the Captain met his demise during a battle with the Native Hawaiians) make this spot a high priority for visitors. Access is via foot and a long steep trail from the road above (bring lots of water and adequate sun protection, as the path is very exposed), or by boat (guided tours departing from Keauhou Bay or Honokohau Harbor, rented kayaks launched nearby, or with your own vessel). Please also note that the dolphins are protected and that there’s regulations about the allowable approach distance... these peaceful animals are often sleeping here and you should minimize any disturbance. Enjoy one of the best places on the Big Island!

My husband and I intended to go there and rent a kayak to go over to the monument. We didn’t see anyone renting kayaks so we decided to walk down the trail nearby that we had heard about. Well, be prepared for a very strenuous hike ! This is a 2 mile hike through thick tall grass, then down a steep lava rock covered trail for a 1300 ft incline. The snorkeling is suppose to be awesome but we couldn’t carry our gear down the trail. I strongly advise getting a kayak ride over to the monument!
