A Lovely Winter Retreat
Jan 2020 • Couples
Leaving the city, with all of it’s noise and traffic, we headed north to a quiet garden retreat. Once you reach the Castle Rock exit, you can tell you’ve entered an unique community with its mix of farmland and cottage living. Do not miss a nice stroll through the downtown area, where you might even stop for an afternoon cider at the local brewery.

When you arrive at Stillmeadows Gardens and Retreat, you can tell the owner cares a great deal about their property and has invested a lot in the gorgeous landscaping. Be prepared to enter the gardens and transport yourself into a calming environment.

Upon entering the home, you have the warm and soothing smell of the fire, the crackling sound in the background as you learn the details of your stay from the host. We received a tour of the property as well as an orientation of the guest room we stayed in. The home itself has a small kitchen facility but appeared nicely stocked. The bathroom was super clean and plenty towels for showering. I really liked the common room between guest rooms. I could easily see myself meeting another traveler in that space for a glass of wine.

The guest room had a beach theme and while I’m a good two hours from the ocean, I get a soothing feeling from the room and it’s garden setting. You definitely get a sense that you are to destress in this space and consider your creative side.

After settling in, I sat listening to the birds chirp and play in the trees just outside the room until darkness. The guest room offers two sitting chairs that make this event possible for a couple seeking a moment of peace. Later, I was able to access the WiFi and find a local pizza place for dinner.

If you’re lucky enough to have the place all to yourself, don’t hesitate to spend the whole evening with your loved one soaking in the hot tub and relieving the week of aches in the sauna.

My favorite part of our stay was morning coffee in the hot tub. This is a true “hot” tub, which is wonderfully therapeutic. This garden helps you find your true retreat. I was very impressed with my stay and would recommend it for any city escape.

Unquestionably the most extensive private garden in Cowlitz County

My first two visits this year left me wanting to see the fall colors at the gardens and to see how the gardens have transformed into their autumn colors. Wow, I certainly was not let down! So peaceful and serine! Each garden bed had it’s own personality and drew me into a relaxed and peaceful state.

Just a 20 minute drive from I-5 through beautiful countryside is a garden that will delight you. Acres of beautiful plants and flowers meandering along with waterfalls, hot tub and sauna. Will be a great retreat someday. In the meantime, enjoy the whimsical, creative gardens created by a magically minded guy.

What a beautiful garden and retreat space! I must have over 100 pictures of beautiful June flowers! I loved all the places to wonder and discover new plants. There are great places to sit all over the gardens and listen to the birds, the running water, and enjoy the serenity that only that combination can bring.
Not only has there been a ton of work done to create this space but also a high skill level!
Certainly worth the stop on your way up or back to see Mt St Helens. Worth the drive just to enjoy the gardens themselves!

Wow, so peacefull!
Feb 2018
I was thrilled to be given a tour of this beautiful and peaceful garden. It happened to be a snowy day and while the beauty of the flowers was comfortably tucked under a bed of snow, the peacefulness was so welcoming. The gardens were described to me in how they would look during the spring, summer and fall. All I can say, is I'll be back to experience each season! I can't wait to take some me time, sit among the beauty of this perfect garden and enjoy! I loved the space that was set aside for the animals and they all looked happy and content. I will do a follow up to this review when I return this spring!

"We visited in the fall and the colors in this garden were absolutely beautiful. From the parking lot we followed a path that weaves through acres of plants broken into several garden rooms. Its a perfect place to have lunch or just spend an hour relaxing-there's plenty of places to sit. If you like nicely manicured gardens then this is definitely worth the trip."

Someone put alot of work into this garden. The whimsy trail is a trail through the woods with all sorts of toys along the way....most likely family toys or garage sale toys that are whimsically added along the walk. It is a cute idea but we were glad it was free or rather there was a donation box to which we contributed as someone goes to alot of work to keep this going. The plants are numerous and we wondered where all of them that are in pots came from and decided they must be left overs from other nurseries? the ones that are planted are pretty and nice to look at. The rabbits are out of control though and it appears as though they are unchecked as far as babies go and they did not look like they had enough food for the number that were housed in a rather small hutch for so many rabbits. I wanted to stay and feed the cute little critters. They need to be either let loose or given to children as pets. Don't go out of your way to see this but if you are in the area, certainly it is interesting if you have nothing else to do.

I want to thank you for your review , and we would love to have you come back. A lot has happened since 2016! With an investment of over twenty thousand dollars into the gardens/retreat, we succeeded in creating a wonderful, visually stimulating garden experience. Stunning plant combinations, unique evergreens, nine water features, multiple meditation areas and a winding path through nearly two acres of garden rooms will inspire and refresh professional gardeners and novices alike. And yes, we even created a free range area for the rabbits! Regrettably, the gardens are no longer open to the public but they can still be viewed by appointment; and of course you can always book a private retreat so as to enjoy the renewal of hydrotherapy in our outdoor hot tub, steam sauna and shower. There's so much to enjoy, so come on back for the beautiful gardens, the restful sounds and delightful scents that are The Gardens at Stillmedows.
