We have hiked 2 parts of the Loowit Trail so far.
Sep 2018 • Couples
In September we hiked the Ptarmigan trail 216A.
In November we hiked to June Lake which is 216B.

Both are a part of the Loowit Trail and both are Great trails with beautiful scenery.
Ptramigan has more elevation gain, but you are rewarded with views of Mount Hood and Mount Adams.
June Lake trail is less elevation gain and a little easier than the ptarmigan trail.
June lake rewards you with a gorgeous lake and waterfall at the end of the trail and some views of Mount St. Helens.
I'd love to hike to June Lake with snow shoes, so I hope to go back.

Loowit Trail #216 from Windy Ridge to the base of Loowit Falls
Aug 2016 • Family
This trail traverses the Mount St. Helens barren pumice plain and affords great views of log-filled Spirit Lake, the blast zone, a lava dome in the crater of the mountain, and the crater itself. We crossed a riparian zone which, as an oasis of greenery, was a lovely respite from the pumice moonscape. We did not hike to the base of the falls, but ate our lunch within earshot of the falls and overlooking the river into which it flows. A family of mountain goats crossed right in front of us.

There was a wide assortment of beautiful wild flowers on the hill descending from Windy Ridge. Prairie Lupine—the first plant to appear after the blast—grew along the whole length of the trail.

Ape Canyon Trailhead via Loowit
Jul 2015 • Couples
We hiked Ape Canyon Trailhead which takes you to Loowit. This hike is not overly scenic as others we have done in my opinion until you get to 5-6 miles where you have a view of 3 mountains. You are actually on Mt.St Helens which is amazing. Total distance round trip that we did was 13 miles. So make sure you bring plenty of snacks. I am a runner - I run about 15-20miles a week so I gauge a hike by how my legs feel when I'm done. So for this hike my legs were sore once it was complete. I think mainly because you are doing a bit of climbing and we were going at a fast pace. Anyway we would go back. Don't forget you need a pass to come here. I am attaching a link with additional details on this hike:
