About
In 2019, Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens opened its doors after a closure of 10 years, this magnificent Grade 1 listed garden was nearly lost forever and has been the subject of the largest garden restoration in England and possibly Europe. These spectacular and ancient gardens are now open for the public to enjoy once again. Many people in the local area have fond memories of their visits and life around these gardens, and we aim to protect this magnificent heritage so that future generations get to enjoy these beautiful green spaces and flora and fauna within.

    Winter Welly Walk
I took my 5 year old and almost 2 year old for the Winter Welly Walk and we had a brilliant time. Without the trail, it would have been a great morning out but hunting for the giant welly boots gave us incentive to explore more of the grounds and spurred my usually reluctant 5 year old to walk the entire time. I hadn’t realised how steep the valley is, so pram and buggy users need to beware that the ascent back up to the cafe and toilets is tough going with a heavy child! We had so much fun that we barely noticed the drizzle and we can’t wait to come back in warmer weather and make use of the new playgrounds when it is complete. 4 stars only because of the climb back to find toilet facilities - although we enjoyed the challenge.
Hello Pepperandmouse Thank you for such a lovely read, we are thrilled to hear that your family enjoyed the challenge and the Winter Welly Walk. We look forward to welcoming you back into the gardens, for our play park and future children's trails.

    A great Day Out.
Both my wife and I are members, and have visited the gardens numerous times and every time we have found them most enjoyable. We went to the Christmas lights, which I thought was excellent, and today took our granddaughter on the Wellie Trail. As a seven year old she found things of interest all the time. I would, however, suggest that where the lane names given on the route, it would help if they were shown on the map to help children, like my granddaughter, lead the way.
Thank you Jonh C for taking the time to write us a lovely review. We are delighted to hear that you and your family had fun in the gardens and on our Winter Welly walks. Thank you for the suggestion, we will pass this information on to our events team, for future trails.

    Excellent Food and Service
Visited the Kitchen (clocktower) Cafe for mothers day lunch. I have to say, the food, atmosphere and service were superb. We weren't too sure what to expect but the Sunday roast was exceptional quality and good value, the staff (David) were very efficient. Would highly recommend.
Thank you Peter for taking the time to write us a review. We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your Sunday roast at our newly renovated The Clocktower Kitchen, on Mother Day. We hope to welcome you back to the gardens again soon

    Beware parking charges
Felt ripped off today. Car parking charges have been introduced since the beginning of the year. £4.80 per car. It's free for members. However, despite this we enjoyed our visit in the spring sunshine. Plenty of camellias, rhododendron and daffodils in bloom. The lakes are beautiful fringed with mature trees. Interesting sculptures displayed throughout the gardens. Paths are well kept and not muddy despite all the rain. Picnics and food are available from the café; no food from outside is permitted.
Thank you for taking the time to write us a review, we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time in our gardens seeing the beautiful spring colour as it has started to bloom, and everything else the gardens has to offer. Our team works hard to take care of our flowers and paths, offering the best experience for all our visitors. Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is a private garden and relies on a diverse funding structure to sustain our initiatives. Support is derived from memberships, and various commercial activities, such as ticket sales, events and parking fees. This multifaceted funding approach enables us to continue our essential work in preserving and enhancing our Grade I listed gardens for all to enjoy. We look forward to welcoming you back into our gardens soon.

    Impressive breakfasts at the Café!
My wife is a member of the gardens and visits regularly with my two year old soon. We find that the gardens are very accessible for our push chair. We find the staff incredibly polite and helpful in both the shop and the café. We have recently started eating in the café more frequently as we have seen a dramatic improvement in the food being served (especially breakfasts), new chefs are making the experience excellent.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. Sounds like such a wonderful experience you and your family are having in our gardens! It's fantastic that it is accessible for your little one's stroller, making your visits hassle-free. It's exciting to hear about your thoughts on the improvements in the café. We're dedicated to offering a quality dining experience, and we're thrilled that you've enjoyed the delicious meals they've been preparing. Our team takes great pride in providing excellent customer service, and it's heartwarming to hear that you've found our staff to be polite and helpful during your visits. We strive to create a welcoming environment for all our visitors, and it's fantastic to see that reflected in your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back soon for more memorable moments.

    beware of car parking charges!
I visit with a friend and we were shocked to discover today that there is now a car parking fee of ÂŁ4.80, plus and increase to the entrance fee. It now works out over ÂŁ20 per person, we cannot car share as we come from opposite directions. I realise you are a private business, this was pointed out quite rudely, probably because other people had complained too! sadly this has put us off visiting again, we will look for another venue for our meets!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry to learn about your disappointment regarding our recent introduction of a parking fee. We do have the information listed on our website, and also communicated details with our visitors through our newsletter. You can sign up for this free email communication through our website and it is something we highly recommend for visitors, as it is a great way of being updated with key information, special offers, exciting news from within the gardens and much more. We have several options available for visitors to save their money, including Leonardslee membership which includes free parking, discounts and exclusive offers for our facilities and workshops as well as FREE tickets for our winter light trail. Visitors can also sign up for membership upon exit after a day visit and receive their entry price back against the price of a membership. And we also offer a pre-booking discount for visitors who plan ahead and book their day tickets online.

    Amazing stay and amazing food!
We had a truly incredible stay at Leonardslee House. The room was amazing and the staff were wonderful. We enjoyed an amazing night's sleep and spent the early evening wandering the peaceful grounds. The food at Interlude was spectacular and the service was wonderful. They catered to our dietary requirements, and the replacement options on the pescatarian menu were amazing. The cocktails were also superb - particularly their own signature gin and tonic (I forget the name!). We would highly recommend a stay here and can't wait to come back!
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Leonardslee House. We are delighted to hear that everything about your stay was beautiful, including the gardens and your meal at Restaurant Interlude. We look forward to welcoming you back into the gardens again soon.

    Lovely walk
Lovely walk around the gardens with statues dotted around the site. It can be steep on the way back to the entrance but is worth it for the rest of the walk. The dolls house museum was a highlight of our visit.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we are happy to hear that you had a lovely walk around the gardens and enjoyed the statues dotted around. We are glad to hear that the dolls museum the highlight of your visit, we do quite enjoy the mini scenes. We look forward to welcoming you back into the gardens for our beautiful spring season,

Parking charge feels underhanded - just be up front about it!
Nice place but the car parking charge leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It's ÂŁ4.80 and doesn't appear to be mentioned anywhere in the online booking process (or if it is it needs to be called out more) or in any of the subsequent 3 emails. I only found it mentioned after our visit, when I went looking for it, buried a few pages deep in the website. I think they're trying to emulate Wakehurst with the parking charge, but people only tolerate that because they are basically getting in for free as National Trust members. That's not the case here, you're paying extra on top of a non-trivial entrance fee. If they want to charge for parking then fine but they need to be more up front about it (or build it into the main ticket price - I assume most people drive anyway), the way it's currently handled just gets people's backs up. I think they need to sort out the comms on this, the cut and paste replies to the other reviews about diversified income streams doesn't feel like they're genuinely engaging with the point people are making. You just need to set people's expectations better before they arrive - the way it's currently handled makes you feel a bit ripped off which unfortunately impacts on the otherwise happy memories of the visit.

    Stunning Garden and Lakes
Loved it here. The gardens and lakes are beautiful.Rhododendrons and Azaleas were in full bloom and giving off a lovely scent. Spend over 4 hours here and watched the Wallerbys being fed-such characters! We knew about the parking charge before going but this didn't put us off. People should expect to pay this as the entrance cost we felt was quite reasonable and helps with the up keep of this magnificent place. A great day and we came away thoroughly relaxed and satisfied that we will be looking to become members.
Thank you for taking the time to write us such a beautiful review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed everything the gardens have to offer from the blooming Rhododendrons and Azaleas to the wallabies. It is positive to hear that you were able to find all the relevant information before your visit. We look forward to welcoming you back into the gardens again soon.

We visited the gardens as a belated Father's Day gift. A family of 4 was not far off ÂŁ50 unless we booked a min of 2 days ahead which would give us a ÂŁ4 saving. We paid at the gate (unpredictable british weather meant last min plans) and then were shocked to notice the parking charges on top! This just left a bitter taste with us. We did enjoy our walk, though with 2 children it meant we didn't get our monies worth. We visited the cafe and of course spent good money but the mass of wasps made the experience unpleasant. We stopped by the play park which my children loved.
Would I visit again? Probably not as I think it's very expensive, which is a shame because the walk was overall nice but it wasn't a day out.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the walk through the gardens and that your children loved the play park. Here at Leonardslee, we offer a family membership From £100 for two adults and two children, which gives you as a family many different from Free paring to discounts on many events and FREE tickets to Leonardslee Lights. We’re sorry to hear that the wasps affected your experience at the café. We have had word from the gardening team that there don't seem to be any active nests in the area of the cafe at the moment. They did remove a dead nest from by the Courtyard Cafe recently. They do monitor this though, feedback has been passed on too and they'll keep an eye out. We hope that in the future, you might reconsider and give us another chance to provide a more enjoyable visit.

We've been members here for years and it's one of our favourite gardens. A big plus for us is that we can take our greyhound here on the lead and know that all other dogs will be on a lead too. The garden is absolutely stunning in the spring with a feast for all of the senses, the colours are absolutely beautiful and change on each visit. Early morning access for members is a treat as you feel like you have the place to yourselves. The after hours events are wonderful, it's such a treat to walk around with the strains of music in the air and a glass of their lovely wine. Summer is a time for lazy walks in the warm, autumn spectacular as the leaves change and winter brings the excitement of Leonardslee lights which true are amazing, as a member you get 2 free tickets so another plus! The sculptures around the grounds are always being added to so even though we come at least once a week we still find a suprise and sometimes even come across a free range wallaby!
The cafe food is great and reasonably priced. The owners are heavily investing in the gardens, with a vineyard, a newly built shop that offers some beautiful things, all with 10% off as a member and there is a brilliant new children's playground. The children's craft mornings were a huge hit with our grandchildren. The staff are great too.
We are off to Interlude the Micheline star restaurant here on Valentine's day for the first time this year so I can't comment on that, but if the rest of Leonardslee is anything to go by it will be spectacular!!

My partner and I have just completed our first year as members of Leonardslee Gardens. We have found during 2024 that there is something for everyone in each season whether it is the huge variety of colours and textures in the plants and trees to appreciating the work of a range of sculpture and art installations. I am a keen photographer and have visited 6 times during 2024 to capture a range of images of the gardens. There is plenty of scope for everyone! The gardens promote a huge sense of well-being from being amongst nature across different seasons. I have a few places where it is possible to reflect and de-stress. Leonardslee represents excellent value in terms of appealing to everyone from toddlers to adults. As a member, I see something different every time I come to Leonardslee from the colours of the rock garden to deer and wallabies! The annual Leonardslee Lights were a definite highlight of 2024 - this was the second time we had seen them - the range of colours and supporting music is well worth seeing - roll on 2025! The staff at Leonardslee all have an infectious enthusiasm for what they do whether it’s working in the Clockhouse Cafe, maintaining the gardens through the year, meeting visitors in the gift shop or welcoming them at the entrance, they really do enjoy working at Leonardslee. I would highly recommend more than one visit!

It’s fantastic to know that Leonardslee has inspired your passion for photography and offered you special places to reflect and de-stress. Nature truly is a wonderful source of well-being, and it warms our hearts to know the gardens provide that for you. Your kind words about the Leonardslee Lights mean so much to us – it’s an event we love bringing to life, and we can’t wait for you to experience it again in 2025! Thank you also for recognizing the enthusiasm and dedication of our team. Your encouragement inspires us to continue providing a memorable experience for our visitors. Arrived today as previously visited last year and now they charge nearly a fiver for parking and it even costs more on the ringo app

I understand there is maintenance costs for parking but by paying a one off charge on no matter time is an absolute joke

This will deter people from coming and I won’t come again or recommend anybody either

We were at leonardslea as part of Sunbeam Pioneer motorbike run. We wished to go into the cafe without visiting gardens but were not allowed access unless we paid ÂŁ15.50. We suggested only one of us go in and the other wait to make it clear we wouldn't be visiting gardens but that was not accepted. The coffee provided for the motorbike riders and support was not same as last year. Despite leonardslea advertising the bike event, the riders and team were not welcome . Also ÂŁ3.20 for an 8oz coffee is overpriced

Very interesting seeing others post similar..

Due to a very sad family EMERGENCY, 4 of 11 tickets couldn't be used. They refuse to refund.

No genuine compassion, just a generic reply along the lines of 'sorry to hear but policy states....'. Apparently I should have spent more money, on ticket protection. I would understand that no refund to be given if tickets couldn't be used because of a cold, but this was a legitimate emergency in a very sad circumstance as I explained to them.

It's a lot of money for many attending and am appalled to be honest. Like many others said, gone many years and sadly now they just seem to have turned to caring solely for profit. Very sad.

Went in memory of my Mum who passed in Aug at only 58yo. Previously visited with her and the family as a tradition, and this situation with them now has just tarred my experience this time with them and also going forward sadly.

Would have been back many years to come but I just don't know anymore. If you have a look at my account I have never left a negative review for anywhere in all my years.

Would recommend researching and booking elsewhere now to anyone who asks based on this very painful experience with them.

Visited on Saturday with my sister and our 4 young children all under the age of 4. ÂŁ64 plus parking plus lunch, we had a very underwhelming lunch in the cafe, during which it absolutely poured with rain so we decided to leave as it was raining too hard to see the gardens or visit the play park. Asked the desk if we could come back tomorrow instead (we had been there less than 30 minutes) and they said no! We would have to pay again. Shocker

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your visit didn’t go as planned, especially with the sudden downpour that disrupted your day. It must have been frustrating, particularly with young children, and we completely understand how disappointing it must have been to leave without fully exploring the gardens or play park. Regarding our policy on re-entry, we do try to balance the experience for all visitors, but we understand this situation was unique. While we weren’t able to offer a return visit the following day, we truly appreciate your feedback and will review how we can be more accommodating in such instances. We do hope you’ll consider visiting us again in the future, hopefully with better weather, so you and your children can fully enjoy the gardens and everything we have to offer.

We decided to take out annual membership as we don't live too far away, and want to be able to visit regularly. The website isn't very easy to navigate and it is only after you've paid your annual membership that you get emailed information about how to obtain your membership cards ( you have to join the queue at Reception).
The gardens and lakes are beautiful , well tended, and we shall walk around them as often as we can.
However the visit was let down by very poor customer service. There was a very long queue at Reception to get our membership cards, which became even longer when one of the two people on the desk left to do something else. The woman on the desk was quite pleasant but there was no guidance about where to go or what to see. We wandered around and eventually found a map ( it would have been much better if we had been given one at Reception). There was another long queue at the cafe, and even more astonishingly there was no-one serving in the shop-like other customers we had to abandon our basket of plants and other potential purchases by the desk and leave without being able to purchase anything.

Leonardslee is no longer the charming, family-owned residence of old. It now feels like a huge money-making machine with excessive parking charges, over-priced shop and cafes and a ban on picnics. The huge new play area and constant work being carried out also detract from what used to be a beautiful, tranquil place to visit. I will not be renewing my membership.

We deeply value the history and charm of Leonardslee, and while we’ve introduced changes to enhance the visitor experience, we understand that these adjustments may not appeal to everyone. The play area and ongoing improvements are part of our efforts to make the estate enjoyable for visitors of all ages, while preserving the natural beauty that makes Leonardslee unique. It’s a beautiful place but so many things leave a sour taste and mean we won’t be returning any time soon.

Management/ the owners have set it up in such a money grabbing way. You’re not allowed to take ANY food in there - you’re only allowed to eat food that’s purchased at their cafe. I’m pregnant, my friend is GF and we had 2 small kids with us - we were told we had to go back to the car park and eat at our parked car if we wanted to eat our food. I’ve never experienced anything like it. People come to these types of places to have picnics.

This was on top of paying ÂŁ78 for entry (4 adults and 2 kids) and ÂŁ5 on top of that just to park in their car park.

We purchased some hot chocolates when we went in and they were so watery and tasteless we had to send them back.

The staff in the cafe were miserable and looked annoyed by everything and everyone in there.

This place could be so good, but unless they change a lot of things - we won’t be returning. Instead we’ll stick to friendlier and less money grabbing places.
