The fort is not always open, as it is run by volunteers/friends. Though it is a great architectural work, it's not such a big loss not being able to visit it. You have to walk around 2 km from the center of Edam.

Compared to Amsterdam this area of Edam is just so relaxing and peaceful. The canalsides are a delight to just sit and ponder the world passing by on foot, bicycle and boat.

The town is quite small and quiet.It is quite close to Amsterdam.It took 30 minutes to get there by bus from Amsterdam central station.Everything here is cheaper and I did enjoy myself here.When Amsterdam is quite busy,the tourists can book the hotels in this town.A...More

To be honest we just stopped here when we went to Zaans Schans for some cheese but this town is veeery pretty. Also some nice cafes, a small museum, impressive rural churches and ofc amazing tasting cheese.
